This year at Salone del Mobile, Knoll showcased a variety of groundbreaking designs by prominent figures in architecture, sculpture, and interior design. Highlights from their collection include Sharon Johnston and Mark Lee’s Biboni Sofa, Jonathan Muecke’s wooden dining set, Willo Perron’s Bun Lounge Chair and Ottoman, Joseph D’Urso’s reissued Occasional Table, along with the revamped Barcelona Collection, which revolves around Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s classic design.
Previously, Knoll has reintroduced timeless designs by the esteemed German-American architect who significantly impacted the minimalist Bauhaus design trend, particularly through the Barcelona Collection, first presented in 1929. This collection reflects Mies van der Rohe’s belief of “less is more.” While these items have historically been available only in leather upholstery, the latest selection now includes fabric coverings and an ultra-matte onyx frame option as well.
Sharon Johnston and Mark Lee’s Biboni Sofa embodies a sculptural aesthetic for contemporary living spaces. Its luxurious scalloped design and gentle curvatures offer both comfort and structural integrity, making it a captivating focal point when placed off the walls. Meanwhile, Jonathan Muecke’s Wood Collection emphasizes the beauty of materials and spatial interactions. By incorporating striking end-grain details and a singular round wooden profile, Muecke reinvents conventional dining furniture with an artistic flair.
As a design enthusiast, I’m utterly smitten with Willo Perron’s Bun Lounge Chair and Ottoman. This duo transcends the realms of comfort and aesthetics by embodying a cloud-like cushion atop an airy, sculptural base. The harmonious interplay of weight and lightness results in a creation that’s not just visually captivating but also deliciously relaxing to the body.
On the other hand, Joseph D’Urso’s reissued Occasional Tables have me swooning too. With its polished steel construction and dual-level functionality, it beautifully embodies the designer’s signature fusion of industrial charm and enduring elegance.
