In The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, some quests may challenge your skills and creativity, but the Anvil Recommendation mission for the Mage’s Guild is generally not one of them. It’s a simple, ‘travel here, defeat this character, return’ type of task.
If you’re not used to battling magic users, here’s one potential challenge. However, the game provides a significant advantage, so if you encounter someone stronger than you in magical combat, there might be some assistance available, though it’s not guaranteed.
How To Start The Anvil Recommendation Quest
To proceed with the Anvil Recommendation, follow a process similar to most Mage’s Guild quests. Head towards the town of Anvil located in southwestern Cyrodil and engage in conversation with the master of the Mage’s Guildhall, a woman named Carahil.
She will provide you with a brief overview of the mission: your task involves tackling a real-world issue in the wilderness. More specifically, your objective is to visit the Brina Cross Inn, located north of the city, and handle what she suspects is a rogue mage who is reportedly targeting traveling merchants.
You can inquire about the circumstances from her, yet she might reply by stating that if you’re not valuable or helpful in the dangerous situations that the field presents, then you wouldn’t be very beneficial to the Guild.
Carahil will provide you with the name of the local contact, a magical woman named Arielle Jurard, and see you off.
How To Find The Rogue Mage

The Brina Cross Inn lies approximately 275 meters to the north of Anvil. If you head that way, you’ll come across it. Inside, particularly during the daytime, you’re likely to spot Arielle moving around the main area.

She’ll advise you to act like a traveling salesman and converse with Christophe, the innkeeper, regarding a lodging. Once you’ve secured a room, she’ll connect with you there, allowing you some downtime until tomorrow.
As a gamer, I find myself in a situation where I can choose to let Christophe know I’m a merchant or keep quiet about it. Regardless of my decision, the outcome remains the same. Soon after renting, a woman named Caminalda will come over with a hint of suspicion, asking if I’m a merchant. In this instance, since the response doesn’t affect the storyline, I’ll go ahead and respond in a way that aligns with my character at this moment.
After this, make your way up to the topmost room at the inn. There, you should stay put until Arielle arrives. She’s expected within about a minute. Once you’ve had a chance to rest, follow her instructions and head east towards Kvatch. When you encounter the rogue mage, as instructed, face them. At that moment, Arielle and another Guild mage will step in to handle the situation.
Despite Arielle appearing as though she ought to intervene during our testing for this mission, she successfully saved us merely one time out of the three trials we conducted. Given that the battle could extend, ensure you are well-prepared to face an opponent with notable casting abilities prior to proceeding.
Following a peaceful rest, it’s time for your journey to continue. Feel free to set off in that direction. Approximately 50 meters east of Anvil, you will come across the cunning mage who is up to no good.
How To Beat The Rogue Mage

On the road ahead, you’ll encounter Caminalda. Although defeating her may not be overly challenging, particularly if you are a caster, she possesses a formidable defense even while dressed casually in blue attire. Initially, she will summon either a Skeleton or weaponized summons to attack you.
In addition, Caminalda relies on Ice-destructive spells for attack and often recuperates her own health, meaning you’ll have to dish out substantial damage swiftly in order to deplete her health rapidly.
If Arielle indeed lends you a hand, she’d call forth a lesser Daedra ally to join the fray too. Consequently, even if Caminalda already has her summon out, the battle would become at least a three-versus-two engagement.
In case you manage to conquer Caminalda, regardless of whether Arielle assists or not, remember to engage in conversation with her once more. She will then inform you that it’s time for you to travel back to Carahil, where she will provide guidance on your next steps.

Additionally, you have the option to search Caminalda’s room at the inn for a key to her private chamber, 120 Gold, and three potions. Inside her room, there is a chest waiting to be plundered.
In keeping with her promise, Carahil consents to pen a recommendation following the resolution of the matter at hand. Admittedly surprised by your action, the task of completing the Anvil Recommendation quest has been accomplished with her letter now on its way.
