Penn Badgley expresses his opinions about You Season 5, stressing that it’s crucial for his character, Joe Goldberg, to be acknowledged as the villain he has been since the series debuted in 2018.
Since the first season, it’s been evident that the main character of You isn’t exactly someone we should support. Yet, despite his questionable actions toward his romantic interests, such as killing those who pose obstacles to their relationship, he has somehow become a “romantic idol” for certain viewers.
What did Penn Badgley say about his character’s fate in You Season 5?
For four seasons, Joe Goldberg eluded law enforcement scrutiny, but his past caught up with him in Season 5. In a chat with The Hollywood Reporter, actor Badgley emphasized the importance of portraying Joe as the genuine villain he has always been.
In Badgley’s words, “What was crucial for me was ensuring that Joe was clearly and strongly perceived and felt as a sexual predator, given his actions. In the first episode, he’s seen masturbating on the street outside a woman’s apartment, who later in nine episodes, he ends up strangling. It’s quite disturbing to put it this way, but I feel compelled to say it honestly. It’s shocking, isn’t it? However, that’s exactly what transpired.
The actor has longed to move beyond his “charming and alluring” on-screen identity, emphasizing the significance of revealing the character’s deepest, darker aspects in the concluding season.
It was crucial that the scene showed him immobilized and exposed in his most defenseless position, and unfortunately, our female lead, either Bronte or Louise, superbly portrayed by Madeline Brewer, came perilously close to a situation of non-consent,” Badgley explained.
He went on to say, “For the first time, we’re truly witnessing this man’s true character and actions, and for the first time, we see him caught in the act. It was crucial to me that his image as a romantic icon would be dismantled. I have been singing that song since the beginning of the season, but I made sure to express it clearly to the writers throughout this season.
You’re all set! Season 5 of “You” is now streaming on Netflix. If you haven’t seen the previous seasons, don’t worry – they’re all there, waiting for you on the same platform!
