It took us embarrassingly long to realize that Oblivion Remastered still has a local map for when you get lost in dungeons.

Initially, locating the local map within Oblivion Remastered was a personal struggle for me, one I kept to myself. However, it wasn’t until PC Gamer news writer Joshua Wolens brought up this issue in our work chat that it was no longer a secret: “Didn’t many of us take longer than we’d like to admit to find the local map in Newblivion?

As a devoted fan, I’d like to share an exciting tip for those who haven’t uncovered it yet in the Remaster: On the world map screen, simply use your mouse wheel to keep scrolling in, and eventually, it will morph into a map of the cell you’re currently occupying. Additionally, there’s a small UI button at the top of the scrollbar to the right of the world map. A simple click on that button will instantly transport you to the local map. Enjoy this hidden gem!

To put it simply, the redesigned user interface (UI) seems quite sophisticated and appears to be structured for the streamlined settings and character menu during game pauses. In contrast to the original Oblivion version, the local and world maps were individually housed within separate tabs in the character menu.

If even enthusiasts like Josh and myself, who have tackled games such as Multi-user dungeons and Psycho Patrol R, found ourselves baffled, it’s likely that other gamers who haven’t yet discovered this hidden aspect are also scratching their heads in confusion.

One issue I find with the combined global/local map is that it’s linked to the scroll wheel, making it impossible to zoom out on the local map; it only has one fixed zoom level. If you try to pull back, it takes you out to the world map instead. However, this is a minor inconvenience and the local map continues to be a useful tool for revisiting Oblivion’s numerous Ayleid ruins.
