Thunderbolts* Sentry Actor Lewis Pullman on Why Playing Bob Was ‘More Difficult’

As the release date for Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts* inches closer, I, a diehard fan, can’t help but reflect on my character Bob and his alter-ego, Sentry, in the movie. Lewis Pullman, newcomer to the MCU with Thunderbolts*, shared that he found it more challenging to embody Bob than the enigmatic Sentry, whose character has been veiled in mystery in the film’s promotional materials.

Lewis Pullman reveals the differences between Bob and Sentry in Thunderbolts*

In a recent interview, Lewis Pullman shared that playing the character Sentry proved more difficult due to the task of filling in for Bob (whose shoes he was essentially stepping into).

Talking with Brandon Davis, host of Phase Hero podcast, about his Thunderbolts* adventure, Lewis Pullman shared why depicting Bob was more demanding than embodying Sentry. “The tougher aspect is actually reversed. I certainly resonate with Bob’s impostor syndrome traits.” He continued, “I believe Bob embarks on a journey of self-belief and understanding his worth and control over situations. Therefore, taking that leap was the more demanding part for me.

Lewis Pullman shared insights about his role in Thunderbolts, explaining that it mirrored his initial acting experience within a Marvel production. “In several aspects, my involvement mirrored my entire journey of joining a Marvel film…every day convincing myself I belonged here and could handle this. It was an intriguing, self-referential experience,” the actor explained.

Lewis Pullman is set to make his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Thunderbolts, and Marvel Studios has officially announced that he will be part of the cast for Avengers: Doomsday, which is slated for release in 2026.

On May 2, 2025, Thunderbolts will hit the big screen. Preliminary reviews from advanced screenings are in, and they’ve been overwhelmingly positive. Critics have commended the movie’s grim atmosphere and the strong camaraderie displayed by the talented cast.
