Greta Gerwig’s upcoming Narnia adaptation has cast the White Witch role.
Currently, Greta Gerwig is developing the Narnia series for Netflix. The initial film, anticipated as the start of a potential new franchise, is slated for release in IMAX theaters during Thanksgiving 2026. After its cinema debut, it will be available on Netflix starting December of the same year.
Who has been cast as the White Witch in Greta Gerwig’s Narnia?
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Emma Mackey is set to play the character of the White Witch in Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of Narnia.
Mackey is particularly recognized for her role as Maeve Wiley in the Netflix series Sex Education. Her acting portfolio also encompasses films such as The Winter Lake (released in 2020), Eiffel (2021), Death on the Nile (2022), and Emily (also from 2022).
Furthermore, Mackey was featured in Gerwig’s latest film, Barbie, that came out in 2023. Upcoming, she will be sharing the screen with Vicky Krieps and Fiona Shaw in a drama called Hot Milk. This movie debuted at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival back in February. Additionally, Mackey is set to appear in J.J. Abrams’ upcoming production, alongside Glen Powell, Jenna Ortega, and Samuel L. Jackson.
Greta Gerwig’s initial film based on the Narnia series is rumored to be a retelling of “The Magician’s Nephew,” which is actually the sixth book in C.S. Lewis’ “The Chronicles of Narnia” series. However, it unfolds before “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” in the chronological order of events.
Initially, there were rumors that pop star Charli XCX was in contention for the role of the White Witch, however, these reports turned out to be too soon, according to The Hollywood Reporter’s article. Despite numerous actresses trying for the part, it eventually boiled down to Mackey and Margaret Qualley from “The Substance.” Netflix chose not to comment on the casting decision.
Meryl Streep is rumored to discuss her role as Aslan in an upcoming movie, with Gerwig handling both writing and directing duties. Prior to Barbie, Gerwig has previously worked on films like Lady Bird (2017) and Little Women (2019).
