Arthur Jafa Honored in Eclectic Program at Paris’s Bourse de Commerce

In sync with the primary display at the Pinault Collection titled “Corps et Âmes“, the Bourse de Commerce initiated an energetic music and performance sequence, orchestrated by Cyrus Goberville, as a tribute to the groundbreaking work and essence of Arthur Jafa.

The exhibition titled Corps et Âmes, consisting of approximately 100 pieces by around 40 artists such as Auguste Rodin, Ana Mendieta, Georg Baselitz, and David Hammons from the Pinault Collection, is a collective exploration of the body’s role in modern art. By transcending conventional depictions, the human body serves as a container for inner energies, consciousness, and metamorphosis. The central rotunda houses Arthur Jafa’s powerful film “Love is the Message, the Message is Death,” which establishes the emotional tempo of the show, creating an impactful narrative on African American history through music and visuals.

Town of Goberville has arranged a set of concerts featuring an eclectic mix of musical genres, encompassing reggae, punk, Puerto Rican salsa, and avant-garde electronics. In February’s lineup was the tribute act by Speakers Corner Quartet to Arthur Russell, accompanied by Coby Sey, Loraine James, Lucinda Chua, among others. Diamanda Galás, Theo Parrish, and Low Jack also delivered standout performances. Future artists set to perform include Crystallmess, Tommy Wright III, and Jessica Pratt.

In conversation with Hypeart, Goberville outlined how Jafa’s idea of “affective proximities” served as his basis for selection. He stated, “I employed this theory, central to Arthur Jafa’s work, as a means for arranging music. Just like Jafa combines contrasting visuals and ideas, I aimed to blend diverse experiences and musical styles – although they may appear disconnected initially, they produce intriguing harmonies in the right context.

Goberville highlighted that every artist presented in his exhibition has ties to Jafa’s universe, either through direct influence or resonating themes, even if these relationships might not be apparent at first glance. He explained, “They are woven together and contrasted, creating room for fresh associations.” Excited about the future, Goberville is especially looking forward to a Memphis rap showcase arranged by Parisian artist Crystallmess on May 22nd. As he shared, “This event will showcase local Memphis legends, some of whom are performing outside their city for the first time. It promises to be an extraordinary evening.
