Ex-Bethesda Dev Declares a Winner in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered Most Absurd Face Category

Once again, Oblivion has made its return, not merely due to the nostalgic journey offered by Bethesda’s remaster. Instead, it’s primarily thanks to all those amusing facial expressions!

The updated version of Oblivion, titled Oblivion Remastered, was developed by Virtuos using Unreal Engine 5 and offers numerous visual and functional upgrades. It operates at a resolution of 4K and 60 frames per second as anticipated, but other enhancements are more substantial. These improvements range from leveling systems to character customization, battle sequences to user interfaces, with all aspects being polished. Additionally, there’s fresh dialogue, a new third-person perspective, and advanced lip sync technology incorporated. Fans find these changes impressive, with some considering Oblivion Remastered as essentially a remake. However, Bethesda has clarified why they opted for a remaster instead.

iggn.ru has already reported on how the funny character faces players have come up with are going viral, and rounded up some of our favorites. But now someone who actually worked on the original 20 years ago has declared a winner.

Jeff Gardiner spent an impressive 16 years at Bethesda Game Studios, beginning with the creation of Oblivion and eventually leading as the producer of its numerous downloadable content. In a tweet, Gardiner (now head of Something Wicked Games) shared that during the testing phase of the original Oblivion, the developers at Bethesda would challenge each other to create the most outlandish facial expressions. As you might imagine, they crafted some peculiar faces back then, but according to Gardiner, a more recent face created for Oblivion Remastered would have been the undisputed winner in those early days.

The face in question, which is quite terrifying, was crafted by the YouTube personality and racecar driver Cody Dennison, also known as CAMELOT331. In a tweet, CAMELOT331 referred to his creation as his “masterpiece,” and gave it the name ‘Sir Vancealot.’

As we neared completion during playtests for Oblivion, there was a friendly competition among us to create the most outlandish facial expressions. This one certainly takes the cake!

During the final stages of Oblivion’s development, as we playtested, there were contests to see who could make the silliest face. I must admit, this one seems like the winner.

It’s clear that Sir Vancealot adopts the style associated with the JD Vance meme, centering around disturbing images often depicted as an overweight Vice President of the U.S.A.

You’ve heard of JD Vance?

Well, here’s 3D Vance.

CAMELOT331’s tweet featuring Sir Vancealot has been seen a staggering 2.1 million times, making him arguably the most renowned Oblivion Remastered character creation to date. Gardiner’s endorsement certainly doesn’t hurt his popularity either.

Indeed, Gardiner’s tweet has ignited a deluge of equally extravagant character creator faces in the responses, with some being just as problematic as Sir Vancealot.

Ooo I think this is awesome
