The Enhanced Version of Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion isn’t a game that dictates your lifestyle choices. Instead, it’s a reimagined version of an iconic open-world RPG, offering you the freedom to explore and shape the world of Cyrodiil as you please, with no restrictions on causing chaos among its inhabitants.
Among the numerous illicit activities available in the imperial realm, one is the crafty act known as pocket-lifting, whereby you surreptitiously swipe items from an NPC’s possession. This isn’t a simple task, so here’s a comprehensive guide on how to successfully make off with these items.
How Does Pickpocketing Work in Oblivion Remastered?
In the updated edition, the stealth tactics remain largely similar to the original, but some players have encountered recurring glitches during instances when they’re searching through both friends and foes’ possessions.
As a stealthy gamer, I’ve found that the art of pickpocketing in this game is surprisingly straightforward. When I sneak up on an NPC and crouch down, I can attempt to lift their pockets. However, if I overreach or they spot me during the act, my thieving spree comes to a swift end. The success of my pickpocketing endeavor hinges on three key factors:
- Sneak Skill: The higher your sneak skill, the better your chance at successfully swiping someone’s purse.
- Value of Item: The higher the value of an item, the lower the chance of stealing it without alerting the target.
- Quantity of Item: The more items you try to steal, the more likely you are to fail.
What Happens if You Fail Pickpocketing in Oblivion Remastered?

In role-playing games (RPGs), it’s quite normal to miss when attempting a skill check, including pickpocketing which involves the use of stealth and dexterity. If you fail at a pickpocketing attempt, various outcomes may occur.
- You won’t be able to try to pickpocket the target again until the next day (that is, until after midnight has passed).
- Other than a select few characters, like the Adoring Fan, you will lower the Disposition of the NPC by 25 points or more. Depending on how low their disposition towards you was already, they might become hostile.
- You will get a bounty and a nearby guard will head to your location to arrest you.
You can use the Chameleon effect to decrease your chance of getting detected while pickpocketing.
