After the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct presentation, where numerous details and fresh games for the platform were shared, there was much conversation centered on the Nintendo Switch 2 Editions of previously released games.
On the freshly introduced handheld device, some games such as Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, Super Mario Odyssey among others are set to receive free updates. However, other games will offer paid Upgrade Packs that enhance visuals or include additional content. But what exactly is the cost for these upgrades to players?
Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Packs have variable pricing
After several weeks since the unveiling of these updates, the official Nintendo UK site has disclosed the prices for the New Switch 2 Upgrade Kits when purchasing the latest system.
Games like “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild” and “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom,” which come with minimal upgrades, are priced at a modest £7.99 each. On the other hand, games that expand upon gameplay mechanics will carry an additional cost.
At present, both Kirby and the Forgotten Land (a new expansion for Nintendo Switch 2) and Super Mario Party Jamboree (which includes the Jamboree TV add-on) carry a higher price point of £16.99 each.
As of now, some Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Packs, such as Pokemon Legends: Z-A and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, haven’t disclosed their prices yet. Given that these upgrades appear to be smaller compared to the expansions in Kirby and Mario Party, it seems reasonable to anticipate they might cost £7.99, similar to Zelda.
The strategy behind pricing the Nintendo Switch 2 Upgrade Packs is intriguing, as it aligns with the Switch 2’s philosophy of flexible pricing. Although some gamers express disappointment over the high costs of games like Mario Kart World, Nintendo is opting to price larger, costlier-to-produce titles higher than smaller projects, offering more content in exchange for a premium price.
It might seem intuitive now, but the strategy wasn’t embraced during the development stages of the initial Nintendo Switch. In recent generations, re-releasing WiiU games would typically cost nearly as much as creating new projects, which isn’t particularly advantageous for players.
To delve deeper into the overwhelming response to the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, explore insights on how Nintendo may have significantly underestimated market demand for this latest handheld device.
