Jana Nayagan: Thalapathy Vijay’s last film was supposed to be Karthik Subbaraj directorial?

There’s been lots of talk and speculation among Thalapathy Vijay’s fans about his decision to leave the movie industry permanently and pursue politics full-time. While he’s currently working on his last film, Jana Nayagan, director Karthik Subbaraj has shared that he, too, had a script for Vijay’s final movie prepared.

In a chat with Galatta Plus, the director admitted that he had presented several storylines to actor Vijay, but unfortunately, none of them materialized. Karthik accepted that he might not be the most effective script presenter for these unrealized projects.

Nevertheless, he also brought up the fact that he had submitted a screenplay for Vijay’s most recent movie, Thalapathy 69, which was subsequently titled Jana Nayagan and is now being helmed by director H. Vinoth.

Speaking about the situation, Karthik shared that he had proposed multiple storylines to Thalapathy Vijay, however, they failed to resonate. He acknowledged his shortcomings as a narrator, admitting that even when he tried for Thalapathy 69, it didn’t turn out as planned. By the time he developed another idea, H. Vinoth had already been chosen for the project.

For those not familiar, Vijay has never collaborated with Karthik Subbaraj as a director throughout his long career. Although whispers of their potential partnership surfaced in the past, no formal collaboration materialized in the end.

Actually, some people had speculated that the actor originally intended for the leading role in “Retro,” which is directed by the filmmaker, was actually supposed to be Vijay from “Ghilli.” But during this very interview, Karthik clarified and debunked those rumors.

Regarding Vijay, it’s been announced that his next movie will hit theaters on January 9, 2026. This political action thriller seems to mirror the actor’s actual transition from acting into politics and is being filmed as a fitting tribute to his life’s work thus far.

Conversely, Karthik Subbaraj’s movie “Retro,” featuring Suriya, is generating a lot of excitement ahead of its release on May 1, 2025. However, this film will face competition at the box office with Sailesh Kolanu’s “HIT 3,” starring Nani, which is also set to be released around the same time.
