Netflix has confirmed that there will be a fifth season for the hit romance drama “Sweet Magnolias,” starring JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Brooke Elliott, and Heather Headley. This beloved series is adapted from Sherryl Woods’ book series of the same name and has consistently appeared in Netflix’s Global Top 10 list in over 60 countries since its launch.
Besides announcing a revival for Sweet Magnolias, Netflix has also unveiled that they will be adapting two more popular novels into series in the near future. This follows the tremendous popularity achieved by their previous TV adaptations based on bestselling books like “You” and “Bridgerton”.
What are the two new Netflix book adaptations?
As a devoted admirer, I’m thrilled to share that Edith Wharton’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, “The Age of Innocence,” is set to be brought to life as a limited series. This captivating project is being masterfully crafted by writer and executive producer Emma Frost, who has also been appointed as the showrunner. The narrative will delve into the intricate web of forbidden love within 19th century New York.
Before this Netflix adaptation, the novel was previously brought to the big screen by renowned filmmaker Martin Scorsese in a 1993 film starring Michelle Pfeiffer, Daniel Day-Lewis, and Winona Ryder.
The show revolves around an intense, emotional love triangle that delves into themes of personal freedom, responsibility, self-discovery, and love in various aspects. This contemporary interpretation stays true to Wharton’s novel but offers a modern perspective, inviting audiences to explore the complexities of love and desire as we journey through the lives of these young individuals. The story raises thought-provoking questions: Is love truly what we feel or merely a physical attraction? And should we prioritize our hearts or our minds in decision-making?
Beyond “The Age of Innocence,” Netflix is also working on a series adaptation of Jhumpa Lahiri’s beloved and award-winning collection of short stories, “Unaccustomed Earth.” This project will be penned and overseen by showrunner John Wells (“The Pitt”) and Madhuri Shekar (“3 Body Problem”). Nisha Ganatra (“Freakier Friday,” “Late Night”) has been tapped to direct the initial episode.
The series is labeled as an epic, dramatic, and culturally rich tale that follows the intricate relationships within an Indian American community. It’s filled with depth, emotion, and memorable characters that will captivate you. Over eight episodes, you’ll be drawn into the exclusive world of a select Indian-American community in Cambridge, MA. A hidden romance between a devoted wife and her long-lost love creates a scandalous situation, leading to new conflicts within this tightly-knit immigrant society.
