Tom Hardy is recalling the time he didn’t get an audition for the 2005 Pride & Prejudice movie.
In April 25, 2025, you can catch Idris Elba starring in the gripping action-thriller flick titled Havoc. This movie is helmed by Gareth Evans, the acclaimed director of The Raid series.
2005’s Pride & Prejudice movie, directed by Joe Wright, is making a comeback in cinemas to celebrate its 20th anniversary. This film adaptation of Jane Austen’s 1813 novel features Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Bennet and Matthew Macfadyen portraying Mr. Darcy.
What did Tom Hardy say about not getting a Pride & Prejudice audition?
In a chat with The Thin Blue Paw Foundation, as shared on @tomhardyvariations’ Instagram, Tom Hardy was questioned about rumors that he tried out for the role of Mr. Darcy in Pride & Prejudice.
No, I didn’t receive an audition for the role,” Hardy explained. “A charming producer informed me that ‘everyone has a certain image or vision of Mr. Darcy, and regrettably, Tom, you don’t fit that mold.’ That’s just how the entertainment industry works.

Then came a series of blockbuster movies starting with Bronson in 2008, followed by Inception in 2010, Warrior in 2011, The Dark Knight Rises in 2012, Mad Max: Fury Road in 2015, and more recently, The Bikeriders in 2023. It’s been one action-packed journey!
Currently, Netflix is developing a fresh adaptation of Pride and Prejudice; unfortunately, Hardy won’t take on the role of Mr. Darcy for this project. The latest news reveals that Jack Lowden from Slow Horses has been chosen to embody the character in the upcoming series. Besides Lowden, Emma Corrin will portray Elizabeth Bennett and Olivia Colman will star as Mrs. Bennett.
