Summary
- The Orrery DLC in Oblivion offers a visually stunning machine based on constellations, but its once-per-day spells are useless compared to better spells in the game.
- The heavily criticized Horse Armor DLC provides additional protection for horses, though it’s not very useful since speedy characters don’t need it and other options are available.
- The Spell Tomes DLC offers spell books with new spells to learn, making it useful for magic and stealth-builds, as well as a way to earn more cash by selling the books.
Numerous extensions are available for the game “The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion”, ranging from substantial to minor. Indeed, among them is the controversial yet celebrated ‘Horse Armor’. In 2006, it was a pioneering concept for its time: a mix of extensive downloadable content packs and smaller, more affordable ones aimed at enhancing the game experience by providing players with additional features such as extra items, accommodations, and upgrades.
Of course, it’s reasonable to assume that the more extensive DLCs for Oblivion, being larger in size, will provide a richer and more immersive experience compared to the smaller content packs. They offer additional quests, fresh locations to explore, and rare items on a much broader level. However, all these expansions are included in the Game of the Year edition, making it an ideal choice for fully enjoying the game. But among these expansions, which one stands out as exceptional?
10. Orrery

- A fully functional Orrery that offers a once-per-day spell based on the constellations.
- Released on April 17, 2006.
- A note will be added to one’s inventory, directing the player to head to Camp Ales (in the southern parts of the Colovian Highlands).
Surprise! Disbelief! You might wonder why ‘Horse Armor’ isn’t ranked first when compared to ‘Orrery’ DLC. The reason is that ‘Horse Armor,’ despite seeming less significant, does serve a purpose. On the other hand, the ‘Orrery’ DLC seems more exotic but lacks an immediate use in the storyline. Instead, the game starts with a straightforward task of collecting items from bandit camps. These items can then be delivered to the Arcade University to eventually unlock the Orrery room.
Watching the main device functioning is indeed a captivating spectacle – even for a game from 2006. However, it doesn’t blend well with the constellations in Tamriel’s sky, creating something of an eyesore. Sadly, the spells it offers once a day at specific times are rather disappointing. They strengthen one particular attribute while weakening another temporarily, and they are all completely ineffective when compared to superior spells that can be found or crafted.
9. Horse Armor Pack

- Steel and Elven armor for horses, plus a free steed.
- Released on April 3, 2006.
- Players must seek Snak gra-Bura at the Chestnut Handy Stables, located outside of the Imperial City to get this deal.
As a gamer, I can’t help but remember the controversial ‘Horse Armor’ DLC from my gaming days. This extra content was supposed to provide additional protection for my trusty steed, yet it felt more like an unnecessary addition. Truth be told, a swift hero like me didn’t really need the extra armor, and those who ventured through the Dark Brotherhood were gifted with Lucien Lachance’s respawning undead steed, Shadowmere.
Still, it’s quite amusing and useful that one can coerce a horse stable to provide a free riding companion. However, dressing them up in armor doesn’t offer significant financial benefits, whether we’re talking about in a game or real life.
8. Spell Tomes

- Books with free spells to learn.
- Released on September 1, 2006.
- Spell Tomes will automatically start appearing in random loot from enemies, containers, etc.
As a keen enthusiast, I must say, the ‘Spell Tomes’ DLC speaks for itself. Inside the unpredictable loot, you’ll find spell books that grant you a fresh, exciting spell to master. Once learned, these can be traded for a substantial profit. Remarkably, several of these spells are quite powerful, providing a bundle of abilities at a lower Magicka cost compared to the base game offerings.
Regardless of whether you specialize in magic or stealth, there are numerous skills suitable for those with less experience in magical disciplines. For instance, summoning a bear can be achieved by learning its specific incantation. This resource proves useful for aspiring witches and wizards, offering them an additional skill set. Additionally, it presents an opportunity to earn extra income.
7. The Thieves Den

- An underground pirate ship with a pirate team that can be recruited.
- Released on May 22, 2006.
- A quest will reveal the location of the ship, Dunbarrow Cave (south of Castle Anvil).
For thieving-minded players, ‘The Thieves Den’ might not seem particularly impressive. Located within a cave, it requires a short trek to reach when quickly traveling to the spot. The inconvenience comes from having to eliminate the monsters dwelling inside before exploring. However, this vast area offers ample space for useful items.
In this setting, you’ll find that several of the recruitable crew members have multiple roles: they not only serve as trainers for specific skills, but also act as merchants selling a variety of items. One such individual even functions as a fence for the Thieves Guild, peddling stolen goods (albeit with a limited 100 gold capacity). Pirates in your crew can go on looting expeditions and return after a week’s time, potentially bringing up to 2,000 gold. The convenience of having everything in one location is appealing, but it could benefit from offering more distinct goods or better accommodation options.
6. Mehrunes’ Razor

- A powerful, unique dagger with a rare ability to instantly kill a target.
- Released on June 16, 2006.
Players will be automatically directed to Sundercliff Watch (located on the ‘S’ on Sundercliff Watch, greatly west of Bravil).
The ‘Mehrunes’ Razor’ expansion offers a fresh quest set in an intricately designed cave system teeming with loot opportunities throughout its journey to obtain the featured Daedric Blade. Swarms of enemies inhabit the cavern corridors, and as you progress, the labyrinth expands to include areas like prisons, smithies, dining halls, and more. Whether you prefer stealth or combat, this expansion provides an engaging experience.
As a passionate gamer, I must warn you that the Drothmeri troops have fortified this region in nine distinct levels. Prepare for an exhilarating journey as each level promises intense combat. The thrill of exploration, though extended, is undeniably enjoyable, if a touch excessive and prolonged. The star of the show, the titular razor, is quite impressive – it offers a rare chance to execute a swift, lethal strike against an enemy, making it an invaluable asset in my gaming toolkit. Furthermore, the equipment here boasts unique enchantments and abilities, adding an extra layer of excitement to the gameplay.
5. The Vile Lair

- An underground fortress with an immediate cure for Vampirism.
- Released on July 13, 2006.
- Access to the lair is via Deepscorn Hollow, which is revealed to be southeast of Leyawiin.
Secretly used by ruthless killers as their hidden stronghold, ‘The Vile Lair’ provides the necessary cover for their operations. It may not be particularly large, but it does contain some extraordinary treasures. Among its distinctive features are a potion that instantly cures vampirism, a sanctuary dedicated to Sithis that grants powerful spells to those with high Infamy levels, and a “Vampire Feeding Pen” where vampires can satiate their hunger.
The remaining available upgrades offer some intrigue, such as a garden of toxic flora, a minion that brings back assorted treasures, and so on. These minor improvements are pleasant enough for most players, but they might not be beneficial to those who prefer to maintain low Infamy levels. A hidden dagger and armor with special powers are worthwhile discoveries, and a less costly option for covertly eliminating NPCs is an appealing bonus as well.
4. Fighter’s Stronghold

- A castle with a team of warriors, cooks, hunters, and the like on standby.
- Released on October 15, 2007.
- A quest will reveal its location: west of Chorrol, at the end of The Black Road.
In the ‘Fighter’s Stronghold’ expansion, claiming Battlehorn Castle becomes yours quite effortlessly. As you eliminate the marauders who are assaulting it, the spirit of a fallen knight bestows ownership upon you. Once this is done, you’re free to personalize and enhance your new fortress.
Initially, it’s a complex fortress featuring numerous exciting features such as the ability to gather allies, a chef who prepares food instantly, a trophy hall where looted items and ingredients from vanquished monsters can be utilized to create statues, among other things. There’s also a hidden section safeguarded by undead enemies, offering valuable items for acquisition.
3. Wizard’s Tower

- A tower with altars for making spells, enchanting, and summoning Daedric companions.
- Released on April 25, 2006.
- A quest marker will direct the player west of Bruma.
Among all the properties you could potentially purchase, the ‘Wizard’s Tower’ DLC stands out as an exceptional choice. Although teleportation often places the player a short distance from the entrance, this enchanting building boasts numerous captivating features within.
In this location, you can craft charms and enchant altars without needing a high Mages Guild rank. This place also has an Atronach Altar that summons a permanent Elemental Atronach. Although it doesn’t offer rare treasures to discover, the Elemental Atronach is quite valuable. There’s a treasure trove of chests, teleportation points to each Mages Guild hall across Cyrodiil, and a garden filled with Alchemy ingredients, including rare and Daedric plants that are safe to use. The tower offers a stunning view as well. This addition is quite beneficial, even for those who are not mage enthusiasts.
2. Knights of the Nine

- A new storyline with a set of unique armor to acquire in various exclusive locations.
- Released November 21, 2006 (North America).
- The quest will begin after being outside Anvil for at least 5 seconds, and then entering the chapel before speaking to the nearby Prophet outside.
The “Knights of the Nine” expansion offers an intriguing questline for players to join. Tragically, a Daedra lord named Umaril has callously slain the devout citizens of Anvil. To avenge this crime, players must take on the role of a knight serving the Nine Divines. However, before embarking on this quest, there’s a tiresome journey across Cyrodiil to locate each waypoint. If your Infamy level rises above zero during this process, you’ll have to retrace your steps.
Beyond the noticeable drawback, everything else shines brightly. There’s more dungeons to explore, unique gear to discover, and an enthralling storyline too. The hunt for the Crusader’s weapons and armor offers a gradual but satisfying series of tasks with some intriguing puzzles mixed in, while the epic showdown against Umaril’s followers and even the god himself is gripping. It’s an exceptional expansion that improves as you progress past its initial laborious quest.
1. The Shivering Isles

- An exclusive storyline, setting, side-missions, enemies, weapons, items, and more.
- Released in March/November 2006.
- A quest marker will reveal the location of ‘A Strange Door’ in Niben Bay, west of Bravil.
Immensely rich with side missions, novel weapons and armor sets, notable places to explore, and much more, The Shivering Isles promises an unforgettable journey. Although it doesn’t offer horse riding or house buying options like some games, the main quest that responds dynamically to your actions is a refreshing departure from the base game, which did not have this feature.
The tale is equally captivating. The character of Sheogorath, the Prince of Madness, is skillfully crafted as a peculiar deity who effortlessly transitions between endearingly eccentric to intensely angered and bloodthirsty. His denizens of madness possess unique personalities that make them memorable. Adding to this, some stunningly beautiful visuals and backdrops are sprinkled throughout, making it a strong contender for the best Elder Scrolls downloadable content available overall.
