Hot damn: The Oblivion Remaster is 125 GB, 2600% heavier than the original game from 2006

19 years after its initial release, Bethesda has given The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion a significant upgrade by wrapping it with Unreal Engine 5. This updated version is now available for $50 (£50), and as an added bonus, you’ll also receive the horse armor that was originally available (except in the special deluxe edition). So, Todd Howard hasn’t forgotten about you!

Wow, isn’t this surprising? Cyrodiil has grown quite a lot since I first played it on my Xbox 360 in 2006. While the original game required a modest 4.6 GB of space according to its system requirements on Steam, the remastered version is asking for more – much more: it wants 125 GB. Considering this, it’s only fair that you can get an economical download of 115 GB thanks to Steam’s compression technology.

For those who appreciate relativity, this represents an approximately 2600% increase in size. With a 125 GB install, it comfortably takes the seventh spot on our list of games with the largest installation sizes, bumping Red Dead Redemption 2 to the eighth position (although, for clarity, we should note that our list may not be completely up-to-date as it’s been some time since we last updated—it’s possible that the Oblivion Remaster isn‘t actually the seventh largest game ever developed).

Despite some oddities with character appearances, especially my beloved Betto Plotius who seems altered beyond recognition, I must admit that the remastered version is visually stunning. According to Bethesda and Virtuos, they’ve used Unreal Engine 5 for the graphics and the classic Gamebryo engine for the core logic, which explains its expansive size. It’s not unexpected that it has gained some weight during this transformation.

What truly captivates me is this: Maintaining Gamebryo as it is ensures that all the quirky Bethesda elements, affectionately referred to as “charm” by Howard in the reveal video, will remain intact and vibrant. Clunky dialogues? Indeed. Characters innocently walking into danger zones one after another? Definitely. Moments where a character appears to float due to a temporary physics engine glitch? If it’s missing, I’m out.

Looking for something that’s both beautiful yet peculiar? That’s exactly the vibe I’m after in an Oblivion remaster! With its massive 125 GB file size, it won’t be long until I can immerse myself in it. The only thing left to know is what will happen to all my mods, and then I’ll stroll through Cyrodiil with a smile on my face.
