Actress Sydney Sweeney, who received an Emmy nomination, and acclaimed filmmaker Michael Bay have teamed up with Universal Pictures to transform one of Sega’s beloved arcade video game series into a live-action film. This move follows the recent triumphs of video game adaptations like the Sonic the Hedgehog movie series, HBO’s The Last of Us television show, and the upcoming A Minecraft Movie.

Bay is now set to take charge as director for the forthcoming live-action version of the iconic arcade driving game series, OutRun, originally released by Sega in 1986. For this project, Sweeney will join as a producer, while it remains unclear whether Zendaya, star of Euphoria, will also make an appearance on screen. Jayson Rothwell (Polar) is assigned to pen the script, with Bay and Brad Fuller set to produce through their production banner Platinum Dunes under Universal Pictures’ first-look deal.

The production of this adaptation will also be handled by Toru Nakahara from Sega, who has previously worked on Sonic the Hedgehog movies, Knuckles, and Golden Axe. Shuji Utsumi, president of Sega Corporation, is supervising the project for the company. Currently, specifics about its storyline and characters are kept confidential.
