When Nani claimed he couldn’t ‘let go’ of his film Jersey amid it being remade in Hindi by Shahid Kapoor

Nani’s 2019 sports drama, Jersey, continues to be one of his most memorable roles to this day. His powerful performance in the film, directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri, was universally praised by fans and critics alike. As we celebrate six years since Jersey’s release, let’s reflect on Nani’s thoughts when he learned that the movie would be remade in Hindi.

For those who might not know, the director chose to adapt Jersey into a Hindi film two years following its initial Telugu release. The Bollywood adaptation featured Shahid Kapoor as the main character. At approximately the same time, actor Nani shared his thoughts on the remake of his movie in an interview with India Today.

The performer made clear that he’d always hold onto his interpretation of Jersey, no matter the circumstances. Yet, given it was the same filmmaker re-telling the tale with minimal alterations, he remained optimistic about a comparable response from the Indian audience who speak Hindi.

He expressed that he can’t let go of his interpretation of Jersey. If they had swapped out the lead actor’s face with another one, it would bother him. However, since the story is being re-told by the original director, Gowtam Tinnanuri, there’s no need for concern. The heart in Jersey comes from Gowtam – his unique perspective and how he crafted the script. When the original director is at the helm, he’s confident that the Hindi version will be treated with the same affection.

Nani asserted that Jersey will forever hold a special place in his heart as his own film. With a remake underway, he’s excited to see the finished product, which might provide insight into areas where his original interpretation could be improved.

In simpler terms, Nani expressed that he would maintain a certain distance from the film’s narrative, viewing himself as a viewer instead of a participant. He wanted to immerse himself in the story just like any other audience member might do.

Originally, in Jersey’s remake, apart from Nani, actors such as Shraddha Srinath, Ronit Kamra, Sathyaraj, Viswant Duddumpudi, Sampath Raj, and several others graced the screen as well.

The movie was created by director Gowtam Tinnanuri, with Naga Vamsi handling production duties. Anirudh Ravichander was responsible for crafting the film’s music.
