While this paleontologist doesn’t find Elden Ring’s monster designs all that realistic, he was impressed by FromSoft’s subtle storytelling and commitment to ‘speculative biology’

In the most recent installment of our video series, Reality Check, paleontologist Dr. Darren Naish revisited his analysis of the creature designs in Elden Ring. It may not shock you to discover that FromSoft’s masterpiece strays from reality, but Naish commended the studio for their focus on detail and dedication to the storyline they’ve created.

For instance: The despised Land Octopus is indeed fascinating. When it comes to environmental storytelling, Naish’s flair could rival that of a renowned FromSoft lore YouTuber. He admires how these creatures are commonly spotted at coastlines or in shallow waters, exhibiting movements reminiscent of their real-life intertidal counterparts. Moreover, he highlights the fact that they exhibit adaptations to a broader range of environments compared to regular octopuses.

Just as I admire one of my favorite DLC bosses, Demi-Human Swordsmaster Onze, it’s not hard to imagine an ancient primate like himself becoming a master of the sword. Archaeological evidence suggests that tool use has been around far longer than our species, Homo sapiens. So, it’s easy to envision a miniature monkey-like creature wielding a blade effectively – and if that were the case, we’d all be in serious trouble!

Other designs seem questionable, especially when viewed through an evolutionary lens. For instance, the Golden Hippopotamus’ enchanting spines resembling hedgehogs raise doubts, just like Bayle the Dread’s flight skill despite his wing serving as a crutch for his missing leg appears implausible.

Prior to sending emails to Dr. Naish about those examples being unmistakably instances of the enchanting power of the ancient Crucible, distinct from biology, consider these points:

a. I have already done so.

b. The esteemed doctor was full of admiration for FromSoft’s fictional storytelling, and readily acknowledged that creating intriguing, memorable monster designs often takes precedence over ensuring evolutionary plausibility in such scenarios.
