It’s quite a moment for Krista Nazaire, the leading actress in the movie “Hell of a Summer” by NEON, which is currently showing in cinemas nationwide!
This action-packed horror-comedy movie revolves around a team of summer camp counselors being pursued by an enigmatic, masked slayer with a devilish appearance. The film is jointly written and directed by Finn Wolfhard, known from “When You Finish Saving the World” and “Stranger Things”, and Billy Bryk, recognized for his work on “Saturday Night”. Fred Hechinger takes on the role of Jason Hochberg, with Abby Quinn portraying Claire, D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai as Mike, Bryk as Bobby, Wolfhard as Chris, Pardis Saremi as Demi, Rosebud Baker as Kathy, and Adam Pally as John.
The production companies involved in this project are 30West and Jason Bateman’s Aggregate Films, with NEON handling distribution. The film made its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 10, 2023, and was released by NEON on April 4, 2025.
Krista, I remember when it was first announced a long time ago. What drew you to the project?
Krista Nazaire shared her enthusiasm about the project: “I had a chance to read the script before joining, and I was captivated by the setting. I’m a big fan of slasher films, especially when they take place at camps or remote locations. But what truly impressed me was the unique vision of Finn and Billy, the writers and directors who are also stars in the film. They knew exactly what they wanted to achieve and how their voice would stand out in the slasher genre as directors. Their approach is so innovative, so entertaining – it made me laugh out loud! Just reading the script had me belly laughing. I felt this was something fresh, written by young actors, and tailored for Gen Z audiences. That’s what drew me to the project.
In the context of the story, if I were Shannon, the romantic interest of Finn Wolfhart’s character, what unique elements would I contribute to the narrative?
In a simpler and more conversational style,
Throughout this situation, she serves as the voice of rationality, though she may not always be correct. Yet, her intentions are pure. Interestingly, she displays a complex character dynamic with different individuals. She has a relationship with Chris on one side, but on the other, she constantly clashes with Bobby, Chris’s best friend. These contrasting relationships reveal two distinct aspects of her personality. I can’t wait for people to observe and appreciate her multi-dimensional character!
Does it remind you of the comedy-horror movies from the old days? The promotional art even seems like those classic posters. Was being a horror enthusiast part of your life before taking on this role? What are some of your preferred horror movies?
Absolutely, horror is definitely my preferred genre. To put it simply, if given the chance, I wouldn’t mind spending the rest of my life immersed in this frightening world. When it comes to favorites, the Child’s Play franchise stands out. I find Chucky, as a villain, quite amusing. The creative ways he carries out kills with a doll are fascinating to me. Texas Chainsaw Massacre is another favorite of mine. I appreciate both the original film and the franchise. Lastly, I have a soft spot for the Final Destination series as well. These are the franchises I’d be happy to discuss.
What’s your favorite kill that you’ve seen in a movie?
This is an intriguing question! Let me share one scene from a movie that really took me by surprise and kept me awake for quite some time – the beheading scene in ‘Hereditary’. Normally, in horror films, children are spared such gruesome scenes. However, this instance was different. I think you might be familiar with the scene I’m referring to.
Yes!
In that scene, there’s a pause where nothing much seems to be happening. I wasn’t on the edge of my seat, anxiously waiting for something dramatic to unfold. If I was, it certainly wasn’t what I was anticipating. The outcome was quite shocking. I must admit, that’s one of my favorite horror movie deaths.
Additionally, I must say that “Final Destination” is truly impressive. They are making efforts to revive it, which I find intriguing. As for you, being a Toronto native, I’m curious about your experience acting in Toronto and how your career has progressed, leading you to where you are now?
KN: It’s a mixture of a bunch of things. I was somebody who grew up really glued to the TV screen and books alike. I really was drawn to anything that gave me an escape creatively. Then, my parents put me in a theater program when I was really young, and I was like, wow, this is what it’s like to be almost put into the story. This is a world in which I would love to live in: “How do I make this a career?” I was thinking these things from really young, and then I put the building blocks in place throughout the course of my life up until now to make that happen.
At the Toronto Film Festival, it made its debut – an event that likely felt like coming full circle for you. Can you recall the general response from the audience during this initial screening? Since it hadn’t yet gained widespread distribution, I’m curious to know what kind of feedback you received while showing it at the festival.
PJ: What intrigued me, though not entirely surprising, was discovering that many individuals aren’t familiar with the voices of Generation Z in media. While some found this relatable, others might find it a bit challenging to adapt. I wish that moving forward, people would be more receptive to Gen Z media and perspectives, as they offer a refreshing and distinctive viewpoint that I eagerly look forward to engaging with further.

Given the broad release of the movie, it’s hard not to notice the large audience of horror fans on social media. With the film likely to generate even more attention, have you developed any fresh interest or passion in this project, given your involvement?
I find it incredibly heartwarming that horror fans are so passionate and encouraging! It’s truly amazing to hear from everyone who has reached out to me, especially young Black women who appreciate the representation I provide. Their pride and support for my work really touch my heart, making me feel valued in this genre. Engaging in discussions about audience reactions to me and my character is something that holds a significant place in my heart.
