Ex-World of Warcraft devs are making a true crime, horseriding MMO because the games industry is “clogged” with games that are all the same

Blue Scarab, a game development company made up of veterans from World of Warcraft and former Helldivers creators, are currently developing a distinctive MMORPG titled “Equinox: Homecoming.” This innovative game combines elements of true crime narratives with horseback riding, setting it apart in an industry the studio perceives as having too many similar titles.

Colin Cragg, the head of Blue Scarab and a seasoned MMO developer at Funcom, emphasized that their team aims to create something entirely distinctive in an industry often characterized by repetition. With many companies jumping on trends as soon as they emerge, Cragg is confident that there’s room for something fresh and innovative.

In an interview with GamesRadar, Cragg mentioned that the development team aims to design a game catering to a distinct audience segment, which typically differs from that of many other games.

As a gamer, I’ve often pondered: “What if we treated a game marketed towards women with the same dedication and financial investment as a top-tier AAA production for any other audience?” In the gaming world, we’re traditionally thinking of teenagers in black T-shirts and jeans.

Blue Scarab’s team, having worked on titles like World of Warcraft and Helldivers, is now focusing on developing a game tailored to a female demographic, following the success of games such as Infinity Nikki and InZoi. While some traditional gamers might be hesitant, it’s evident that games with a feminine appeal are gaining popularity rapidly, as developers are increasingly catering to this audience.

He remarks that the whole sector is overflowing with game releases boasting a staggering $300 million budget, all revolving around identical gameplay styles. Essentially, he’s emphasizing that this approach overlooks a significant 52% of the global population.

Absolutely, it’s important to note that classic, macho games aren’t vanishing any time soon, given their massive fan base. However, the former World of Warcraft developers are thrilled about their new project, which isn’t just unique but also adheres to a set of rules that deviate from what many developers are accustomed to. From my perspective as a fan, it’s intriguing to see them venturing into uncharted territories!
