Wondering why characters played by Daniel Kyri (Darren Ritter) and Jake Lockett (Sam Carver) won’t be part of Chicago Fire beyond Season 13? With potential budget reductions and contract negotiations ongoing, the fate of several long-term cast members, including these beloved characters, appears unclear. As production carries on and renewal talks intensify, speculation grows about what lies ahead for Firehouse 51.
Here’s what we know about Darren and Sam’s possible exits from the series.
When are Daniel Kyri’s Darren Ritter and Jake Lockett’s Sam Carver leaving Chicago Fire and why?
According to reports from Deadline, based on information from production sources, both Daniel Kyri and Jake Lockett are set to depart Chicago Fire following Season 13. If the series gets renewed for a fourteenth season, neither actor will be reprising their roles. Over the course of seven seasons, Kyri portrayed firefighter Darren Ritter, while Lockett played Sam Carver, a fellow firefighter, for three.
According to reports, it appears that NBC’s Wolf Entertainment shows are making budget reductions, leading some team members like Kyri and Lockett to leave. As per Deadline, their departures might be related to an attempt to lower costs on the show “Chicago Fire,” which is currently in talks for renewal. This move seems reminiscent of cost-cutting strategies employed two years ago, when several main cast members from the Chicago and Law & Order series saw a decrease in their episode appearances due to financial considerations.
In Seasons 7 and beyond, Kyri initially appeared as a recurring character, later ascending to the main cast from Season 9. He played Darren Ritter, who progressed from an aspiring firefighter to a well-respected team member. Lately, Ritter has been involved in a romantic entanglement with Officer Dwayne Monroe; however, their relationship took a turn when Ritter decided not to cohabit with Monroe.
In the eleventh season, Jake Lockett came aboard Chicago Fire, playing Sam Carver, a firefighter who had a complex history. Over a span of three seasons, Carver developed a strong connection with Stella Kidd and demonstrated his worth in high-stress situations. During the early part of his narrative arc, there were conflicts between him and some team members; however, he eventually won their confidence.
Filming continues for Season 13, but if two main characters decide to leave, the show could arrange fitting goodbyes. Neither NBC, Universal Television nor Wolf Entertainment have spoken about the potential cast changes. With ongoing negotiations for all Wolf Entertainment series, it’s possible that more actors may depart.
