A studio based in London, named Forestalgia, unveiled a versatile furniture arrangement system, which aims to foster a feeling of camaraderie or shared experience.
Labeled as “Modular 001”, this assortment comprises a group of seats designed to fit into cavities surrounding a tabletop made of glass. The design of the table mimics the Forestalgia brand logo, and it features a central element, often referred to as the “soul,” which encompasses a mood light and a speaker.
Drawing inspiration for design, Emmanuel Lawal, the founder of Forestalgia, turned to the unique layouts of traditional Japanese chabudai and horigotatsu tables. These tables are characterized by their short legs that keep them close to the ground. The horigotatsu design even has a sunken floor for added legroom.
In tribute to Forestalgia’s affection for African mid-century modern design, the studio opted to craft the seating and tables using premium plywood. This was then covered with foam and a warm, tobacco-yellow vegan suede material.
Lawal aimed to design a versatile furniture setup that deviated from traditional forms, intending to foster a relaxed environment conducive to interaction. This approach was somewhat inspired by the saying, “If you’re not bringing something to the table, don’t expect a seat.
Despite not being intended for me, those words stirred a deep emotion within me, reminiscent of my adolescence, Lawal explained. Growing up in Greenwich, south-east London, it was often challenging to find a sense of belonging in the arts community, as opportunities to interact with like-minded creative individuals were scarce.
