Interestingly, Poehler’s presence on the show was kept hidden from Bateman and Arnett by co-host Sean Hayes who had secretly invited her as part of the podcast’s unique format where each host takes turns inviting a surprise guest, without revealing the identity to their fellow hosts ahead of time.

Before starting the interview with Poehler, Hayes concisely shared some details about her past relationship with Arnett to both the audience and his sister Tracey.

Amy Poehler shared that she went to great lengths to keep her upcoming SmartLess appearance a secret from her ex-partner, Nick Kroll. She explained that their youngest son had noticed her schedule on the kitchen table. The ex-couple share two sons: Archie (born in 2008) and Abel (born in 2010).

“‘You’re doing ‘Smartless?’ Does Dad know?’” the Parks and Recreation alum recalled telling her youngest son. “And I said, ‘No, don’t say anything.’” (via Soap Central)

Arnett stated that he extended an invite for Poehler to join SmartLess, which led Bateman to inquire from Hayes whether they had talked about featuring Poehler on the show with Arnett.
