Ellen Pompeo intends to stay on Grey’s Anatomy right up until it finally shuts down permanently, and we couldn’t be happier about it.
In a recent conversation with Variety, the actor who’s been portraying Meredith Grey for over two decades, made it clear that though she might not rejoin the series as a permanent cast member, she has no intention of permanently leaving it behind.
She stated that it wouldn’t be logical, either emotionally or financially, for her to leave. If she were to depart altogether, everyone would benefit from the profits of her dedication and effort.
Beyond monetary considerations, there’s a deeper emotional connection she has with the project – and it’s not surprising, given that the project holds significant meaning for many others as well. In essence, this could be rephrased as: “The show carries deep emotional significance for people. I believe expressing gratitude is appropriate in this context.
The latest Hulu series, “Good American Family,” featuring Pompeo, has stirred up an age-old query: could Meredith Grey be venturing beyond Seattle for new opportunities? Indeed, she is, by taking on a part-time role, which allows her to explore other ventures – something she’s had limited chance to do since “Grey’s” debuted on ABC in 2005.
Although the show has thrived even with reduced screen time for Pompeo, it’s important to clarify that this isn’t the reason for its success. Nevertheless, she continues to embody the soul of the series. From her now-iconic opening and closing voiceovers, to the lasting impact she will have on residents and attendings alike, the possibility of continuing Grey’s Anatomy without the only remaining Grey character could leave a significant void that no other captivating characters or intriguing plotlines might be able to replace.
Pompeo has truly earned her success and has every right to claim it, both literally and metaphorically. Her character will freely move in and out of the stories, just as she pleases, and there’s no better way for this to happen. The newer generations have a chance to shine in fresh storylines, allowing Pompeo the opportunity to step back without being completely absent. After 21 seasons and close to 450 episodes, we’ll see how long both the show and its leading actress continue to prosper. (As a loyal fan, I hope they last forever, but who knows?)
