GoldenEye 007, Rare’s renowned first-person shooter for the Nintendo 64, has had a long struggle with rights management issues, confining it to limbo for many years. However, the game can now be played on both Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. Regrettably, the revamped version doesn’t meet the expectations of fans who have been yearning for a more polished remaster for this classic title.
During a recent conversation, Stephen Kick, leader of Nightdive Studios, shared that they proposed an extensive remaster for the cherished James Bond video game. Unfortunately, Nintendo decided against allowing the team to revive the game for contemporary gamers.
Nintendo stopped another GoldenEye 007 Remaster
During an interview with VGC, Kick shared that Nightdive Studios assembled an exceptional team to rejuvenate the classic Nintendo 64 game accurately. Previously, this studio had collaborated on other well-loved N64 titles, successfully reviving the Turok series and delivering improved versions of these games on contemporary platforms.
As a gamer, I’ve found that the updated GoldenEye on contemporary platforms is passable, but Nightdive Studios has truly outdone themselves with their remastering work. Turok received a significant upgrade with modern rendering techniques, extended draw distances, improved controls, and more, making it an enhanced gaming experience. And let me tell you, Star Wars: Dark Forces Remastered by this studio is nothing short of revolutionary!
Nightdive managed to bring MGM/Eon, the James Bond rights owners, aboard, investing a considerable amount of energy in presenting their idea for the game. Regrettably, the entire project unraveled when they encountered obstacles while seeking Nintendo’s approval.
Kick replied, “We’re all set to proceed.” Then someone asked, “By the way, have you secured the permissions from Nintendo?” Kick responded, seemingly surprised, “I thought that was your responsibility.” In response to this, Nintendo sternly stated, “No third party will ever be allowed to work with any of our material, ever.
Nightdive Studios’ work on Turok had caught Nintendo’s attention, yet the company remained firm in its strict policies, unwilling to grant an exception for Nightdive to work on a remaster of their properties. The team reported that Nintendo’s response was relatively brief, indicating they weren’t prepared to give Nightdive access to any of their intellectual properties for a full remaster project.
On other occasions, a refined version of the classic GoldenEye 007 has been halted. In the Xbox 360 era, Rare had developed an entire remaster featuring fresh assets, updated controls, and more, intended for the Xbox Live Arcade platform. Similarly impressive to their Perfect Dark re-release, this version would have offered an improved way to experience the original N64 game. However, just like the Perfect Dark re-release, it was unfortunately abandoned due to some partners refusing to cooperate.
Currently, you can enjoy GoldenEye 007 on Xbox One, Xbox Series, and Nintendo Switch. Additionally, the 360 version of the game is available online for players who possess the necessary skills to access it.
