Hannah John-Kamen, the actress portraying Ava Starr / Ghost within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is gearing up to revisit her role in the forthcoming superhero film Thunderbolts. As she looks back on her character’s evolution since her introduction in Ant-Man and The Wasp, it’s interesting to note that Ghost started off as an adversary in the 2018 release. In the closing scenes of the movie, she departed alongside Lawrence Fishburne’s Bill Foster, a significant mentor figure in her life.
Hannah John-Kamen says Ghost is very ‘dangerous’ in her new Thunderbolts* suit
In an interview with Fandango, John-Kamen along with other cast members of Thunderbolts* talked about their movie and their individual characters. The actress from SAS: Red Notice described her character as a “solitary figure,” implying that Ghost was independently active within the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline between Ant-Man and Wasp and Thunderbolts*. It’s possible that she undertook some assignments for Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Valentina before meeting other future members of Thunderbolts*.
In response to a question about her character’s development, John-Kamen explained, “She’s isolated…She’s quite solitary, and she can be quite headstrong about that. It will be challenging for her to interact with others, especially this group.” The actress later revealed that Ghost sports a new suit in Thunderbolts* which she dubbed “Gertrude.” She added that the suit originated from Berlin and its theme song is Rammstein’s 1997 hit, Du Hast.
In a recent interview, Hannah John-Kamen emphasized that the character Ghost in Thunderbolts has changed from her volatile self in Ant-Man and the Wasp. “Ghost now carries a completely different demeanor,” the actress explained. “She’s no longer fragile, she’s not anxious, she’s not easily terrified of her own death.” John-Kamen revealed this transformation is due to the quantum energy imparted by Michelle Pfeiffer’s character, Janet Van Dyne. “It’s a sense of control… it’s a healing process that has made Ghost stronger than ever, which can be quite dangerous,” she added.
Thunderbolts* premieres in U.S. theaters on May 2, 2025.
