God of War composer Bear McCreary explains their journey with Kratos “feels complete”, but they will come back is asked

Remarkably talented musician Bear McCreary left an indelible mark with his work on God of War. From the deeply moving E3 2016 unveiling to the conclusion of Ragnarok’s complimentary Valhalla expansion, the composer crafted some of the finest music ever heard in a Western AAA video game.

In a forthcoming podcast discussion with VGC, McCreary expressed that he perceives his contribution to the God of War series as complete following the conclusion of the Norse Saga. Yet, he remains receptive to revisiting the franchise should he be invited.

Bear McCreary “feels complete” with God of War

In an upcoming podcast discussion, McCreary shared his perspective that his contributions to the series seem to wrap up a full narrative. Visiting the God of War 20th Anniversary Retrospective Exhibit further solidified this conviction for him, suggesting that his chapter has come to an end.

The composer expressed it was emotionally stirring to understand the vast number of individuals who contributed, and none of them held a primary role in every project. He likened it to a collective intelligence or team of people, stretching back to the initial game.

He expressed that the final chapter in Kratos’ journey provides a sense of resolution, making him feel that his part, which began at E3 2016 and continued through to Valhalla, is now fully realized. In essence, he feels fulfilled as if he has told a complete story.

When asked if he would be willing to return to the series anyway, McCreary didn’t close that door.

He said, “Should there be any more requirements for music in the future, you can reach out to me,” he added, expressing his pride for his work. “I’m always available and ready,” he emphasized.

Although the Norse Saga has concluded, whispers suggest a fresh God of War trilogy is brewing with an Egyptian backdrop. This change of scenery and narrative opens up possibilities for the renowned PlayStation series to continue thriving in the future.
