Following a frenzy on the internet about the cost of the Nintendo Switch 2, Sony has announced increased prices for PlayStation 5 gaming systems.
Currently, there’s an increase in the price of the PS5 Digital Edition that’s impacting countries such as the United Kingdom, Mainland Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. This price hike is attributed to the tough economic conditions being experienced globally.
PS5 consoles get a new price hike
According to Sony’s recent announcement, the price for a PS5 Digital Edition has risen by £40 or €50. This means it will now retail at £430 or €500 instead of the original £390 or €450. To put this into perspective, the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 is priced at £395 in the UK.
In this generation, the Digital Edition console has experienced its second price rise. Previously, in August 2022, the price went up from £360/€400 to £390/€450, resulting in a £30/€50 increase for consumers.
As a devoted gamer excited about the PS5, I’m thrilled to share some good news! Sony is showing its appreciation for Digital Edition customers by lowering the cost of the PS5 Disc Drive from £90 to £70. This thoughtful move demonstrates their commitment to us, the gamers.
It’s also important to mention that neither the standard base PS5 with a disc drive nor the rumored PS5 Pro console has experienced a price hike in most parts of the world. So, if you’re in the market for a new gaming console, this might just be the perfect time!
In Australia and New Zealand, both the Digital Edition and the standard console have faced a double blow due to price hikes. Now, you’ll find the Digital Edition priced at AUD 750 in Australia or NZD 860 in New Zealand. Meanwhile, the disc-compatible version will set you back AU $830 or NZ $950.
The increase in the cost of PlayStation 5 (PS5) consoles is accompanied by an upward adjustment in the prices of PlayStation Plus subscriptions in various regions as well.
In simpler terms, this indicates that the current five-year-old gaming console now costs more than its original price at launch and even surpasses the expected cost of the forthcoming Nintendo Switch 2.
Amidst a difficult economic situation marked by rising inflation and unstable currency values, Sony announced that they would increase the suggested selling price for the PlayStation 5 console in certain regions, as stated in their official blog post.
Initially, video game consoles would decrease in price following their release, often accompanied by less expensive versions hitting the market as a cost-saving measure. However, it seems this practice is now a thing of the past.
