Mahershala Ali’s Blade-Moon Knight Look From What If…? Revealed

A piece of concept art by Marvel artist Justin Kim, posted on Instagram, offers fans a closer glimpse into one possible portrayal of Mahershala Ali’s Blade within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Though Ali was selected for the role in 2019, he has so far only provided an off-screen voice cameo as the vampire slayer in a post-credits scene from the 2021 film Eternals. Interestingly, a different variation of Ali’s Blade character, represented as Moon Knight, is briefly showcased towards the end of the final episode of the Disney+ animated series What If…?. Justin Kim’s artwork offers fans an intricate preview of this alternative character design.

Best look at Mahershala Ali’s Moon Knight-Blade from What If…? revealed

Last week, Justin Kim posted pictures on Instagram of the character he designed for the What If…? series – Moon Knight as Daywalker. In the caption, he wrote: “In my last post about What if…?, I was fortunate enough to design Blade in the guise of Moon Knight. My intention was to use the Moon Knight’s bandages to create sharp edges and make it look like he could draw a blade from any part of his body anywhere. I also thought that since both characters have similarities as being like ninjas, I emphasized this aspect.

Previously noted, fans have been given the most detailed glimpse at Ali’s Blade since the esteemed actor entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The unique blend of Blade and Moon Knight, among others, was momentarily showcased in a compilation along with other blends that didn’t feature in the primary narratives of any What If…? episodes. These included Wolverine combined with Thanos, Doctor Strange merged with Hulk, Silver Surfer paired with Jubilee, and Black Panther partnered with Storm.

As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but take notice of how things unfolded when Ali joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Exciting whispers about a standalone Blade movie began to swirl, only for the project to go through numerous transformations. Over the years, various filmmakers were said to have hopped on and off the project. In October 2025, Marvel Studios decided to scrap it from their release schedule, fueling speculation in March 2025 that the whole thing might have been called off.

Simultaneously, Wesley Snipes, famed for his portrayal of Eric Cross Brooks/Blade in New Line Cinema’s Blade Trilogy (1998-2004), returned to the role in the 2024 MCU film titled Deadpool & Wolverine.
