In case you’ve been absent from recent internet discussions, you might find it surprising that reminiscing about the final decade of the 20th century has become a topic of debate.
For an example, consider the image below from a recent post:
Some might comment on that image, stating, “That seems implausible. Rooms weren’t typically decorated like that during the 1990s.
The image you see is often recognized as a symbol of that era, encapsulating and solidifying the image of the ’90s in our cultural consciousness. However, do the ’90s truly represent the way Gen X and Y nostalgically recall them?
Since the 90s were a time when electronic recording media was already popular, we can compare our nostalgic recollections with the original versions. Yesterday, author David V. Stewart posted an archived home movie from the early 90s. If you’re excited about seeing the 90s viewing the 90s themselves, then this video is perfect for you!
Did you enjoy your nostalgia trip?
Here are my main takeaways from the video:
The reality is not the ideal
People anticipating a minimalist home adorned with Star Wars, Mario, and Marvel Comics memorabilia might have been underwhelmed. Instead of a modern film set, the actual 90s house was brimming with items similar to those we’ve previously discussed. Indeed, his brother owned a Genesis console, while an old NES made a fleeting appearance. However, the majority of the house was filled with outdated furniture and decor from the 1980s – quite different from the romanticized image of the ’80s that Generation Y tends to remember inaccurately.
Spiritual poverty; material wealth
In a comparative sense, they were considered financially modest in the 1990s. However, if we compare them to today’s standards, they would be among the wealthiest one percent, outstripping most Millennials’ financial goals. Interestingly, despite occasional mentions of religious holidays and decorations, there was little evidence suggesting that faith held a prominent place in their household.
Yet, despite the appearance suggesting a hardworking HVAC entrepreneur married to a part-time nurse assistant, it’s astounding that a relatively small-income family managed to purchase a spacious split ranch of that size in suburban areas and raise four children, a phenomenon that seems inconceivable in today’s context.
Speaking of which …
It shows what a functioning economy looks like
The videos themselves clearly demonstrate the ongoing prosperity of the post-war era, which was still in motion during the 1990s. Here are some key points to note:
You could get a fast food meal for less than $2.00
The Gen X video producer owned a moderately good second-hand vehicle, an acquisition that likely didn’t require him extra jobs such as lawn mowing or newspaper delivery.
Every room shown on screen (except the bathroom) had a TV.
That last point is a red flag that the 90s weren’t as idyllic as most people think, because …
Kids were already addicted to mass media
And even back then, regime propagandists were already using TV to warp kids’ minds.
The video gives proof of an even more disturbing social disease.
Dear Friends, let me clarify that the presence of TikTok creators isn’t a fresh scourge upon our society.
Dear Gentlemen, I must dispel the misconception that TikTok users are a recent affliction on civilization.
Both sentences convey the same meaning while maintaining a natural and easy-to-read style.
Reflecting on the difference between the boys’ and girls’ actions in that home video, I can’t help but be reminded of a popular saying: “Boys will be boys,” indeed! It seems to encapsulate their rowdy, free-spirited energy so accurately.
When feeling nostalgic about the ’90s, consider that just the appearance of an old-fashioned, bulky camcorder similar to Marty McFly’s would cause ’90s ladies to become quite noticeable or attention-grabbing.
The video was filmed in the month of April, 1990, and it has a contemporary feel to it, albeit with fewer entertainment options available.
It’s quite amusing really, that individuals who are so eager to follow modern trends from the ’90s, often referred to as “Bro” culture, might find themselves utterly uninterested if they were actually transported to the 90s. Their neighbors, Christians, on the other hand, might find joy in such a journey.
Human memory tends to highlight the most memorable aspects of the past, leading people to overlook just how much time in the 1990s was spent on waiting compared to today.
You got up and waited for the schoolbus.
Then you waited through stultifying clases for lunch.
After which you waited some more for the final bell.
Whereupon you went home and waited for your folks to get home.
On the weekends, you’d often find yourself spending long hours eagerly awaiting calls from friends or the start of your preferred television programs.
Fruit fly attention span digital citizens would have cracked up within an hour of going back.
Watching the ’90s from our current perspective makes it clear that longing for the past and attempting to return to it is a futile endeavor.
The path ahead is the only direction available. You won’t stumble upon the 1990s in this journey. However, with earnest prayers and significant dedication, we might discover a Christian state that embraces confession. At least it promises to be more spiritually enriched. Furthermore, under an integralist system, a sole wage-earner could potentially afford a home and sustain a family of four without financial strain.
_______
Now it’s your turn. What did you take away from watching the 90s watch the 90s?
