Breath of the Wild Switch 2 Edition doesn’t include the game’s $20 DLC for some reason

Ever since the details about the Nintendo Switch 2, including its specifications, launch games, and features like GameChat, have been unveiled, Nintendo has been facing criticism for the cost of their first-party titles. Particularly, they’ve been heavily criticized for the high prices of Nintendo Switch 2 versions of previous games such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.

In simpler terms, Nintendo has disclosed that the latest version of Breath of the Wild for Switch 2 doesn’t come with all the bells and whistles. The core game gets an upgrade with enhanced graphics and smoother gameplay, but any additional content in the form of DLC (Downloadable Content) is not part of the package.

Breath of the Wild Switch 2 Edition doesn’t give you DLC

In a fresh update, Nintendo’s revamped Switch 2 edition of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild offers novel additions. Alongside the improved graphics, gamers can earn accomplishments and take advantage of unique features like audio map navigation through the Zelda Notes section within the Nintendo Switch Online app.

If you’ve already purchased the game on the standard Nintendo Switch, you have two options to get the updated version:

1. You can acquire it through a special Upgrade Pack priced at only $10.
2. Or, as part of the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pass subscription service.

Players buying the latest The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Switch 2 Edition, priced at $10, should note that they’ll need to buy the Expansion Pass separately, unlike during its initial launch on the Switch 1 where it was included in the game price.

According to what was shared with IGN, Nintendo clarified that the upcoming “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition” does not come with the Expansion Pass DLC for the game. Instead, you can obtain this additional content by making a separate purchase.

The $20 Expansion Pass includes two downloadable content packs: The Master Trials and The Champions’ Ballad. Enhanced with additional features such as Master Mode, extra armor, a stylish Master Cycle, this DLC provides immense value, making it seem more like an integral part of the updated game rather than an extra addition.

As a devoted Nintendo fan, it’s no secret that their first-party games hold their value exceptionally well. However, for this upcoming re-release, I believe it would be fair to include the DLC as part of the package. In today’s gaming market, it’s common practice for other companies to do so. In fact, even Cyberpunk 2077’s Switch 2 port comes with its expansion and a game-sized DLC already integrated.
