ESO Direct 2025 highlights Seasons of the Worm, subclassing, and much more

The ESO Direct 2025 event has passed, during which Susan Kath, executive producer at ZeniMax Online, and Rich Lambert, game director, detailed the upcoming changes for Elder Scrolls Online. Essentially, they’re planning a major overhaul – the chapter structure is being transformed into a seasonal one, allowing new storylines, dungeons, and activities to be released in stages over several months. These updates will now be grouped together under a single umbrella called the content pass.

Content pass

Kath and Lambert concluded their discussion with an essential piece of news – the ESO 2025 Content Pass. This is a single purchase that encompasses all content the studio will produce throughout the Seasons of the Worm period. It includes:

  • Seasons of the Worm Part 1 – new zone and story (June 2025)
  • Writhing Wall event (TBD)
  • Feast of Shadows dungeon pack (Q3 2025)
  • Seasons of the Worm Part 2 – story finale and the rest of Solstice (Q4 2025)
  • Prequel mission (available now)
  • Bonus mount, pet, and memento (TBD)

Additionally, there’s a fresh initiative aimed at simplifying the process of re-entering the game. This includes updated tutorials, a revamped visual appearance for the initial islands, and forthcoming enhancements to the PvP mode known as Cyrodiil Champions in the main game. These improvements don’t necessitate the purchase of additional content.

The worm turns

ESO’s ongoing narrative expands upon the storyline of the Worm Cult, introduced 11 years ago in Seasons of the Worm. Instead of being released as individual chapters, this expansion will be divided into multiple segments, each launching over several months. This is why the title includes “Seasons”. The initial segment is expected to debut in June 2025, transporting players to the western region of Solstice, a vast island located off the southern coasts of Tamriel.

According to Lambert and zone’s statement as reported by Michelle Graves, they are eager to explore diverse methods for depicting cultural fusion in Solstice. The unique blend of high elf and Argonian architectural styles and customs is noticeable within the main urban areas on the island, yet venturing beyond these civilized zones reveals a tropical ambiance, complete with pristine oceans, expansive beaches, and rare wildlife species. Notably, there are several new monster types inhabiting this idyllic setting. The narrative of Solstice delves deep into Argonian culture, shedding light on the history of the exiles from Argonia and the elvish tribes who established the island. Additionally, tensions with the Worm Cult serve as a backdrop to these cultural explorations.

The ZeniMax Online team mentioned that they are employing the narrative of the Worm Cult to reintroduce characters from Elder Scrolls Online’s past, such as Prince Azah, Gabrielle, and others, into prominence once more.

Additionally, there’s a mystical carnival thrown into the mix, as expected, and some ruins whose importance will unfold as the story unfolds further. The upcoming chapters of Seasons of the Worm will introduce fresh dungeons, challenges, and eventually, a new type of mission that sets the stage for the second half of the narrative. One such challenge is Ossein Cage, a 12-player raid set in Cold Harbor, where players engage in a battle to prevent a Daedric Lord from obtaining an artifact that amasses pain and converts it into power for its owner.

Through the wall

As a dedicated gamer, I find myself immersed in The Writhing Wall, the monumental event that sets Seasons of the Worm apart. This is ZeniMax Online’s inaugural endeavor on an unprecedented scale. The goal? To unite every player in a joint effort to breach the soul-made barrier partitioning Solstice’s eastern and western realms.

Each server will chart its own course, with success hinging on our ability to collaborate effectively and efficiently. The pace at which we break through the wall is entirely up to us. Lambert hinted that there’s no risk of failure in The Writhing Wall; instead, we’ll only gain access to what lies beyond once we’ve completed all necessary tasks – a journey that could span days or weeks for our server.

During the Solstice event and its entirety, access is restricted within the premium package. However, Lambert and Kath mentioned that characters in the basic game can still contribute to the wall mission in unique ways. They didn’t specify how, but it’s known that the quest will involve various tasks, such as collecting specific resources or guarding crucial sites.

Class warfare

In the epic Seasons of the Worm, one of the most exciting updates is the introduction of subclassing! As a gamer, this means I can now blend up to two skill sets from other classes into my current character. For instance, I could give my necromancer a taste of warden’s abilities or vice versa. The cool part? ESO’s subclassing is account-wide, so if I have a necromancer and a warden, both will be able to tap into the other’s skills. Kath and Lambert hinted that they’re planning a way for us to unlock skills from classes we haven’t even played yet, but they didn’t spill the beans on the specifics just yet.

In other words, subclassing features are available across all chapters and the main game itself, meaning you don’t need to buy Seasons of the Worm to utilize it. However, do note that the ESO subclassing will only provide abilities for classes that you already have access to. For instance, if you own just the base game, you won’t be able to create a subclass using skills from the Arcanist class unless you purchase the Necrom expansion as well.
