Modernist London Home Restored With Rich Wooden Interiors by Studio Hagen Hall

Studio Hagen Hall, a rising design studio based in London, has revealed their latest complete renovation project – the Pine Heath townhouse situated in Hampstead, North London. Initially intended as a minor facelift, the plan morphed into a thorough overhaul, resulting in Studio Hagen Hall’s transformation that preserves the mid-century charm and showcases the original Modernist concept of the building through its cozy wood-themed interiors.

In his statement, Director Louis Hagen Hall highlighted the “meaningful and harmonious conversation” between the original character of the house and the modern updates. He explained that they made sure to preserve the unique modernist charm of the property, which is a recurring focus in their projects. This method resulted in an interior that’s both minimalistic yet warm and textured, perfectly blending with its custom-made furniture.

This house, designed by Ted Levy of Benjamin & Partners during the late 60s, stretches across five floors and connects with eight similar townhouses nearby. The interior features warm wooden accents like built-ins, paneling, and cabinetry that complement the vintage Paraná pine in the central stairwell. The studio replicates the rare, endangered Paraná pine, closely matching its original stain for a seamless fit. In the main living area, a wall-to-wall olive green carpet evokes the style of the 50s and 60s, while a custom upholstered sectional is covered in textured green boucle fabric. The unique layout, with lofted and offset floor plans, subtly separates different spaces for a more personal living experience.

In the kitchen, stainless-steel countertops paired with a beige grid tile backsplash harmonize well with the wooden cabinets that carry an industrial vibe. Shutters designed like mechanical louvres are installed above the sink, offering extra privacy from the street. Above, vintage-style stippolyte glass cabinetry adds yet another texture to the kitchen and serves to distinguish the dining area. Meanwhile, bathrooms with tiling feature various hues of brown, green, and blue that blend with the cherry wood found throughout the house.
