It came as a surprise that FromSoftware’s upcoming game, “The Duskbloods“, due for exclusive release on the Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026. The primary emphasis is on multiplayer, allowing up to 8 players to engage in a PvPvE competition.
The Bloodsworn And Their Abilities
Characters in this game will assume the persona of “Bloodsworn”, potent figures endowed with magical abilities derived from blood. There are more than a dozen playable characters, each armed with distinct melee and ranged weapons. Furthermore, these characters boast abilities such as double jumps, which can be tailored to individual preferences later in the game. Following each battle, players will revert to a central location where they can trade their earnings for additional customization options.
Lore
As per developer Hidetaka Miyazaki, The Duskbloods revolves around characters known as Bloodsworn. With humanity’s existence nearing its end, each character is sent to different time periods in a quest to acquire “First Blood.” This event is referred to as the “Dusk of humanity.” The narrative unfolds by exploring individual characters and their unique lore, which can be influenced by the protagonist. For instance, a winged rat might appear as a sophisticated guide, offering advice similar to the firekeepers found in Dark Souls series.
FromSoftwares Latest Experiment
Despite primarily being a multiplayer game, FromSoftware, under Hidetaka Miyazaki’s leadership, affirms their commitment to creating more single-player titles. This doesn’t signify a change in direction, but rather an “exploration” or “experiment” as they blend cherished features with competitive multiplayer. Notably, Escape from Tarkov serves as a significant influence for the game, hinting at mechanics like raids. The visual style presented in the trailer showcases a blend of gothic and contemporary aesthetics.
Speculation
The studio is recognized for learning from previous projects and blending the best features into their new games. Although The Duskbloods appears unique, it’s likely that elements reminiscent of Dark Souls or Elden Ring will be present. It’s also possible that aspects from this game could be adopted by others in the future. The intended audience for this game won’t be identical, but it’s intriguing that they’re releasing an exclusive for the Switch. Perhaps this move will motivate more developers to view the Switch 2 as something other than a toy for children.
What’s your take on both the trailer and the interview? Does it excite you, or are you more inclined towards wanting a Bloodborne 2 instead?
