Known for his roles in films like “The Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” Brand will engage in an interview with New College President Richard Corcoran, delving into topics such as cancel culture, suppression of free speech, and censorship. Russell Brand to give speech at Florida college amid allegations
On April 12, 2025, the performer from “Arthur” will appear on stage at the Mildred Sainer Pavilion located in New College, Florida.
In a discussion entitled “Freethinking Unleashed: A Chat with Russell Brand on Freedom of Expression, Suppression, and Cultural Influence,” the renowned figure, Russell Brand, will delve into topics such as cancel culture and more. For those eager to watch, his speech can be found on YouTube or X (previously known as Twitter), according to People.
The incident is scheduled for eight days following the Metropolitan Police’s accusation of a three-time British Comedy Award winner for four offenses: one each of rape, indecent assault, oral rape, and two counts of sexual assault. Initial allegations against Brand surfaced in September 2023 when five women shared their accounts in an investigation jointly carried out by The Sunday Times, The Times, and Channel 4’s Dispatches series.
In spite of the accusations, New College authorities have chosen to proceed with Russell Brand’s scheduled speech. This decision was confirmed back in February 2025. Alexandra Nicole Islas, Director of Public Policy Events at the Florida institution, stated their reasoning: “In a climate where public pressure often aims to stifle rather than foster dialogue, New College of Florida is reinforcing its commitment to nurturing environments for free thought—rather than restricting it.
In response to the allegations, Islas explained that the college decided to proceed with Brand’s planned appearance as part of a broader discussion on society, culture, and free speech. She underscored that such challenging conversations should have a place in public discourse. Moreover, she highlighted the significance of maintaining an environment where people can engage in discussions about society, considering respect, critical thinking, and academic honesty.
Although Russell Brand refutes the accusations, he’s set to attend his court hearing on May 2, 2025, as planned.
