I, a manager at a specialty store in Knoxville, express my concerns over the tariffs President Donald Trump is implementing. These tariffs could potentially disrupt the distribution of comic books, impacting our business and customers alike.
It’s anticipated that recently implemented tariffs will influence a wide range of items, among them being comic books. Notably, most American comic books are produced in Canada, which has faced 25% tariffs as part of the Trump administration’s policies.
Concerned comic book retailers fear that these tariffs could increase the cost of importing their merchandise, potentially leading to higher prices for consumers. As Grant Mitchell, co-owner of Nirvana Comics in Knoxville, points out, the profit margins on comic books are already quite thin, making a 25% price hike significant.
In 2020, many publishers changed their printing locations to Canada as Amazon bought a significant amount of cardboard for their packaging, causing a shortage in paper production from there. This shift was not only due to lower costs but also because it was economical. If all publishing companies were to switch their printing to America, we would likely witness an increase in prices too,” said Grant Mitchell, one of the owners of Nirvana Comics in Knoxville.
If you’re so concerned about prices, why don’t people working in similar fields not demand that the U.S. finance and trade industries take action to reduce costs? Trump seems to be aiming to bring U.S. industry back to domestic borders for this very reason. Just after returning to office, he instructed the government to lower prices for American citizens. It’s puzzling how the owner of the specialty store could insist on keeping distribution and printing under Canadian management indefinitely when it seems they have little faith in U.S. finance. Is it really because they believe that, with Joe Biden in office, things were naturally superior? This is truly difficult to comprehend.
It was observed that the comic book sector underwent significant transformations over the last year, as one of its major distributors ceased operations.
Mitchell mentioned that the year has been quite turbulent for comic publishing, leading one company to take on additional costs. However, this situation might result in increased prices for our customers, although we’re working hard to minimize any negative impacts on them.
It appears that the idea of converting comic books into a paperback or hardcover format has not yet been proposed by anyone. Surprisingly, this subject matter seems to be considered taboo in discussions among retailers and other relevant industries.
Are they so strongly against the standard offerings of traditional bookstores that they’d rather sink with a failing ship? Regardless, let’s entertain the thought that if we’re discussing DC/Marvel, the artistic value in their work seems to have deteriorated significantly over time. Selling such products might be an unnecessary drain on resources.
He elucidated that, due to the tight-knit nature of the comic book community and their mutual efforts to assist one another, a company might be inclined to shoulder the cost of the tariff.
He remarked, “This industry is extremely close-knit. When someone encounters difficulty, others usually respond. Many creators, when faced with health insurance issues or personal health problems, find support through crowdfunding platforms like GoFundMe. Consequently, it doesn’t surprise me at all that there are companies ready to take on the burden to safeguard comic shops like this one.
Perhaps the overly close ties within this medium could ultimately lead to its downfall. It’s worth noting that specialized stores haven’t been immune to dishonesty; for instance, there have been reports of individuals manipulating the Magic: The Gathering card market by secretly swapping valuable cards from packs, and so on. Furthermore, it seems there are those who are hostile towards Comicsgate, irrespective of its intention to promote characters like Mary Jane Watson, among others. Additionally, some have been known to boycott comics created by independent artists whose political views they dislike. If they refuse to distance themselves from politically motivated censorship, can we really expect the public to continue supporting them? Lastly, if the quality of the comics they sell is subpar, who in their right mind would want to purchase them? Public support for this industry needs substance and value.
As a movie buff, I concluded my remarks by encouraging everyone, regardless of their stance on tariffs, to rally behind our local small businesses that might face the brunt of these tariffs’ effects.
Canada is subjected to a 25% tax on imported goods due to concerns over insufficient action in preventing the influx of fentanyl into the United States, a concern Trump previously addressed by stating that goods under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade agreement (USMCA) would be exempt from these tariffs.
If this situation holds true, it seems that the Canadian authorities have made an awkward and harmful move, which shouldn’t come as a shock. Given Canada’s past actions, there are certainly more questionable things they’ve done. However, these tariffs are still problematic due to the incompetence that has led to them. Improving their behavior could potentially lead to the removal of these tariffs. There’s still an opportunity for Canada to negotiate a favorable agreement. Meanwhile, it would be wise for U.S. businesses, even those in entertainment like comics, to push for better practices within their respective industries and financial sectors. Ignoring such issues only reinforces the perception of being self-centered and unfunny.
Note from the Editor: It’s worth mentioning that the tariffs won’t affect books produced in Asia, as confirmed by ICV2. This includes countries like India, China, Japan, Vietnam, Turkey, Thailand, and 42 others. I find it curious that the comicbook industry didn’t explore alternative options when tariffs were first threatened seven years ago.
