As an ardent admirer of “The Hunger Games” universe, I’m thrilled to share that Emma Thompson might be joining the cast for the upcoming prequel, “Sunrise at The Reaping“. If this comes true, it promises a fascinating addition to the storyline.
Who is Emma Thompson in talks to play in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping?
Based on a recent update from Nexus Point News, there’s speculation that Emma Thompson could be cast in an upcoming film. The news suggests that Thompson might play the character of Drusilla in the movie.
In the book that serves as its basis, Drusilla plays the role of chaperone for the tributes from District 12 in the 50th edition of the Hunger Games. She is portrayed as a largely unsympathetic character in the novel and often has tense interactions with other figures.
Emma Thompson is a renowned actress from Britain, famously recognized for her roles in films such as Much Ado About Nothing, Sense and Sensibility, the Harry Potter franchise, Cruella, and many others. Over the course of her illustrious career, she has garnered two Oscars, three British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA), an Emmy, and a pair of Golden Globes.
24 years prior to the series’ events, the story of Sunrise on the Reaping unfolds. This tale recounts how Haymitch Abernathy, portrayed by Woody Harrelson in the films, emerged victorious in the 50th Hunger Games, making him the sole victor from District 12 until Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark achieved their triumph.
In the United States, the movie “The Hunger Games: Dawn of the Reaping,” distributed by Lionsgate, is set to hit theaters on November 20, 2026.
In simple terms, the upcoming Hunger Games prequel movie is under the direction of Francis Lawrence, who’s previously worked on several films within the series. The production team includes Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson, with Cameron MacConomy serving in an executive role.
Billy Ray is currently composing the screenplay for “Sunrise at the Reaping.” He previously contributed to the script for the first Hunger Games film, which debuted in 2012, and was nominated for an Academy Award for writing Captain Phillips, released in 2013.
Besides his other work, he’s been involved in writing screenplays for films like Volcano (1997), Shattered Glass, which he also directed (2003), Suspect Zero (2004), State of Play (2009), Overlord (2018), Gemini Man and Terminator: Dark Fate (both 2019), Richard Jewell, and various others.
