Why did Mike White cut a sex scene in The White Lotus Season 3 finale?

In the final episode of the third season, creator Mike White intended to feature a sexual encounter between characters Piper (Sarah Catherine Hook) and Zion (Nicholas Duvernay). On The White Lotus Official Season 3 Podcast, White discussed why it was significant for Piper’s character arc that she experienced her first time.

In a conversation, White stated that the character chooses to experience her first sexual encounter in the final episode. Remarkably, she engages in intercourse with Zion, who happens to be Belinda’s son. This results in a scene where she admits, “Saxon was correct about this one thing. I need to get this over with.” After departing from the monastery, her desire becomes evident as she expresses, “I need to have sex.” Towards the end of the restaurant scene, she is seen scoping out potential partners.

Following her encounter with Zion, Piper was set to engage with Saxon (Patrick Schwarzenegger) on the boat. Upon seeing her, Saxon might remark, “You seem changed,” indicating a transition in his character.

In the final moments, as they’re sailing aboard the vessel, I found myself reflecting on how wonderfully intimate our encounter had been. Meanwhile, he was engrossed in his self-improvement literature, creating a striking contrast.

Eventually, due to time limitations, White decided to eliminate the scene. Moreover, White clarified that the sex scene seemed incongruous because at that point in the storyline, Piper’s father, Timothy (played by Jason Isaacs), was on the verge of committing a murder-suicide.

White expressed, “The situation was such that an additional 10 minutes would have extended it further, yet here we were past ninety minutes already. There was a touch of romantic comedy-like tension amidst the attempt to harm the family with the pong pong fruits, making it seem like I was trying to juggle too many narrative elements simultaneously.
