Even today, Id Software’s initial DOOM series remains among the most gratifying first-person shooter games ever created. There’s just something incredibly satisfying about firing a slug into the Super Shotgun and obliterating the Cacodemon’s perplexing back openings.
Despite the fact that DOOM modders are continually tweaking and adjusting the original Doom Guy (now referred to as the Slayer) so he can perform tasks beyond just blasting through demon hordes, one creative modder has produced the scariest modification yet: a McDonald’s Simulator.
Doom Guy goes to McDonalds
Developed by modder SlendyMawn, the “Put the Fries in the Bag Mod” has the 90s FPS protagonist stuck in a perpetual job at a McDonald’s restaurant. Instead of the usual game music, the sounds of fryers, grills, and cash registers fill your ears, creating an immediate feeling of unease as if you were working there forever.
In the course of your daily tasks at the restaurant, you’ll encounter characters reminiscent of DOOM enemies and marines who will be placing their food orders. You’ll serve them by clicking a series of buttons. Occasionally, a demon may appear, dash straight to the cash register, and request to use the restroom. (Hint: In real life, no one at a McDonald’s will notice if you go to the bathroom without asking.)
Well, as a seasoned gamer, I’ve learned that demons aren’t exactly the chatty neighbors next door. They’ve got a short fuse and a knack for dishing out punishment when you mess up their sequence or take too long. If you linger, they’ll bark “Hurry up in Hell!” – fittingly so. And if you botch their arrangement? They might just stomp off in a rage or conjure an Arch-vile to torch me good and proper – now that’s the kind of service I imagine fast food joints in America would strive for!
In the twilight of each day, I find myself marveling once more at how the latest DOOM mod breathes new life into Id Software’s timeless shooter. It’s incredible to think that this game, now 31 years old, has managed to stay relevant even in today’s fast-paced digital landscape. Just a year or so ago, “putting fires in the bag” was an obscure phrase; but today, it’s become a catchphrase among fans like me. DOOM is not just immortal—it’s the embodiment of eternal youth. Despite being older than most of the creators churning out memes these days, it consistently manages to stay ahead of the curve, adapting and evolving with the times.
Absolutely, it’s not only the dedicated and enthusiastic modding community that keeps the series going. In fact, we’re looking forward to the release of DOOM: The Dark Ages on May 13, 2025. This upcoming title, featuring an open-ended structure to foster more medieval-themed games in the future, could usher in a fresh era for this renowned franchise.
