Sterling K. Brown, famous for playing in This Is Us, shared why he stopped using his middle name Kelby at the age of sixteen, during his interview on The Kelly Clarkson Show. This tale touched Clarkson so deeply that she teared up.
What did Sterling K. Brown say about middle name?
Sterling K. Brown, the Primetime Emmy-winning actor, has an emotional backstory explaining why he no longer uses his middle name, Kelby. In an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show, Brown shared that his father is Sterling Brown Jr., while his grandfather was Sterling Brown Sr. As a child, Brown sought to establish his own identity and forge a unique path, leading him to prefer using a different name other than the family tradition.
Brown previously expressed that the name Sterling seemed like an old man’s name to him, but his perception shifted once he turned sixteen. The actor from The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel shared that his father had passed away when he was only ten years old. Consequently, by the time he reached sixteen, it had been a significant amount of time since he had heard the name Sterling.
At the age of 16, after going five and a half years without hearing his name, Brown felt a longing to hear it once more, prompting him to request that others address him as Sterling. This intriguing tale behind his name change stirred emotions in Kelly Clarkson, with Brown himself appearing quite tearful.
In a similar vein to his own personal experiences with grief, Brown’s emotional portrayal of Randall Pearson in “This is Us” is deeply felt. Initially, Randall discovered he was adopted, but eventually learned the identity of his biological father. Regrettably, William Hill (played by Ron Cephas Jones) died in the 116th episode of the series. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Brown described that particular episode as a powerful emotional punch.
In simpler terms, Brown received multiple honors and praises for his portrayal of Randall Pearson, one of which was the award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series at the 2017 Emmy Awards.
