Recently, General Motors (GM) debuted its innovative Advanced Design Studio in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, England, showcasing a new electric vehicle (EV) concept car for the future. Known as the Chevrolet Corvette concept car, this automobile is among the three prototypes anticipated to be unveiled in 2021.
General Motors (GM) is planning for its newly established design teams to spearhead creativity and advancement throughout the company. By opening a studio in the UK, GM underscores its dedication to Europe as it expands its Cadillac electric vehicle business in the region. The upcoming Corvette sales in the U.K. and mainland Europe will be kickstarted with the opening of this new design studio, which is tactical and a key component of GM’s global design network. Headed by Julian Thomson, the studio occupies approximately 24,584 square feet at the Royal Leamington Spa studio and employs over 30 designers. According to Michael Simcoe, senior VP of global design, “The role of our advanced design team transcends merely designing production vehicles. They work together within our global design network on both production and concept vehicle projects, but their primary focus is envisioning what mobility might become in the next 5, 10, or even 20 years, and driving innovation for GM.
Under the label of Corvette, the company unveils innovative cars, ideas, and prototypes that blend classic engineering with contemporary automotive aesthetics. Simcoe stated, “As part of our creative exploration for Corvette, we commissioned various studios to design hypercar concepts, which we will reveal more of in the coming months. It was crucial that they all paid tribute to Corvette’s rich heritage, yet each studio brought their distinctive artistic vision to the project. Our advanced design network is precisely meant to do this – to explore boundaries, challenge norms, and envision the future.
Regarding the futuristic electric concept Corvette car, the design team combines the classic Corvette legacy with modern, forward-looking aesthetics. Thomson explained, “One unique and important aspect of our design is a feature called Apex Vision, which pays homage to Corvette’s focus on the centerline and was inspired by the famous ‘split window’ 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray. This feature highlights a central vertical spine that also serves as a structural element and offers a wide-angle view of the road and surroundings.” The upper part of the exterior showcases traditional design elements with a modern twist, while the lower half concentrates on practical technical design, incorporating electric battery technology within the structure and aerodynamic components. This car design takes cues from racing cars, offering both on-road efficiency and track performance, as well as featuring a streamlined underbody for a lowered ride height and other enhancements.
