As the sixth and last season of “The Handmaid’s Tale” is about to air, viewers are pondering why this popular sci-fi series is coming to an end. They are also curious if the brand will live on with potential spin-offs in the future. This thought-provoking drama was brought to life by Bruce Miller and first debuted in 2017. The main cast includes Elisabeth Moss, Yvonne Strahovski, Ann Dowd, O-T Fagbenle, and Max Minghella.

What’s the reason behind The Handmaid’s Tale wrapping up its narrative with Season 6? Is it possible there will be a new series set in the world of The Handmaid’s Tale at some point in the future? Here are the details for you.

Why is The Handmaid’s Tale ending after Season 6?

The popular series, “The Handmaid’s Tale”, will come to an end following Season 6. Both Hulu and its creator have agreed to bring the story to a close at this point.

During a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, the show’s mastermind, Bruce Miller, shared that he’d been contemplating the conclusion of “The Handmaid’s Tale” from its inception – right after he delved into Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel with the same title.

In a past conversation with THR, Miller shared during the launch of the fourth season that he had a clear starting point, progression, and conclusion envisioned for the show’s narrative. However, he discovered captivating avenues to explore and expand the series’ storyline further.

Back in March 2023, according to THR, Miller relinquished his daily management role on the show, passing it on to writers Eric Tuchman and Yahlin Chang.

Will The Handmaid’s Tale continue with a spin-off?

Indeed, the world of The Handmaid’s Tale is set to expand with a new chapter titled “The Testaments”. This exciting news about its continuation was shared in September 2019, just after the third season wrapped up.

On April 7th, filming for The Testaments began, a fact confirmed on social media by Hulu several days prior. Actress Ann Dowd, known for her role as Aunt Lydia in The Handmaid’s Tale, is set to reprise her character in the upcoming series. In addition, Elisabeth Moss, who previously played June Osbourne, will take on the role of an executive producer.
