In a fresh attempt, Hollywood is reviving the comedic series “The Naked Gun”, with Liam Neeson assuming the role of Frank Drebin Jr., the son of Leslie Nielsen’s quirky and legendary character. The reboot trailer offers numerous humorous instances, but it also takes a playful swipe at O.J. Simpson, who was known for portraying Nordberg in the initial films. In a nod to the show, new characters salute their fathers’ portraits, with Neeson acknowledging Nielsen’s Drebin and Hauser recognizing Captain Ed Hocken. However, when it comes to Nordberg’s portrait, a police officer looks up, shakes his head, and simply says, “no way.
There’s no denying it’s an easy target to joke about The Simpsons’ contentious past, but it’s hard not to chuckle at the audacity – it seems reminiscent of the offbeat humor from The Naked Gun. If the reboot manages to keep this sharp wit while taking aim at other untouchable topics, it could potentially recapture the anarchic genius of the originals. With Akiva Schaffer (of The Lonely Island) in charge and Seth MacFarlane producing, there’s optimism that this won’t be just another money-grab but a true revival of spoof comedy’s essence.
Once known for his humorous portrayal of the clumsy Nordberg in the original Naked Gun series and films, O.J. Simpson later found himself at the center of a highly publicized court case – the murder trial that would come to be known as “the trial of the century.” This was after he was accused and subsequently arrested for the murders of his former wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ron Goldman. In essence, O.J.’s journey from comedy to infamy took an unexpected turn. Consequently, the trailer’s jest at O.J. caused a range of reactions among viewers.
Some spectators deemed it as the ideal one-liner – an unabashed jibe that fits seamlessly into the realm of The Naked Gun, even elevating the somewhat ordinary teaser. At the very least, it serves as a hint that this remake might not shy away from walking on thin ice for a chuckle.
