The success of “A Minecraft Movie” was crucial for Hollywood, and it certainly lived up to expectations during its debut weekend, noticeably reducing the gap in this year’s box office earnings.
As I sat down in the cinema, I never imagined the magnitude that “A Minecraft Movie” would reach. In its early days, this blockbuster smashed records, raking in an astounding $157 million from U.S. and Canadian theaters alone, as per Sunday’s studio estimates. Globally, it’s eyeing an extra $144 million, bringing its global debut to a whopping $301 million. With school spring breaks ongoing, “A Minecraft Movie” is only getting warmed up.
Apart from being the most significant film premiere in 2025, “A Minecraft Movie” surpassed all previous records for a video game adaptation, a title once held by “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” ($146 million). Initial predictions suggested “Minecraft” could earn around $80 million over the weekend. However, it almost doubled that estimate.
In the world of movies, there are no absolute guarantees, but launching a production based on the highest-selling video game ever is undeniably a strong foundation. The fact that the block-based game may not have a traditional narrative was virtually irrelevant. Despite this, its 200 million active monthly players flocked to it regardless.
In simpler terms, “The PG-rated movie, helmed by Jared Hess (‘Napoleon Dynamite’), was jointly produced by Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros. The production cost around $150 million (excluding advertising costs). Jack Black and Jason Momoa headline the star-studded cast which also includes Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, and Sebastian Eugene Hansen. The story follows their characters as they’re transported into a fantastical realm called the Overworld, where they embark on a perilous, yet absurdly funny, journey to return home.
The response to “A Minecraft Movie” was somewhat divided among critics, but it received a relatively positive B+ from CinemaScore and 4 out of 5 stars on PostTrak exit polls. The majority of the audience were men (approximately 62%) and the film appealed more to younger viewers, with around 64% being under the age of 25. Warner Bros. rolled out the movie on a grand scale, debuting it in 4,263 domestic theaters and broadcasting it on 36,000 screens worldwide.
According to Paul Dergarabedian, a senior media analyst for Comscore, it might surprise you that younger audiences are particularly fond of visiting cinemas. We initially assumed they would lean towards small screens, but it turns out their preference is for a combination of small and big screens. These movies have become must-see theatrical events, with interest reaching unprecedented levels.
In recent times, video game adaptations have experienced significant milestones, such as “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” the popular “Sonic” franchise, and the chilling saga of “Five Nights at Freddy’s.
Video games used to have varying success rates at the movie theater, but the secret to their box-office triumphs has now been unlocked, stated Dergarabedian.
This week’s box office runner-up was the Jason Statham action movie “A Working Man,” raking in an additional $7.3 million during its second weekend. In third place, we find the sequel to the ongoing series “The Chosen: Last Supper.” The second part (consisting of episodes three to five) accumulated $6.7 million over the weekend. The final set of episodes will hit theaters on April 11th.
In its third weekend, “Snow White” moved down to the fourth spot, earning $6.1 million. To date, it has garnered more than $168 million worldwide.
2025 has been challenging for Hollywood and cinemas, marked by setbacks such as “Snow White” and “Mickey 17.” However, a successful film can dramatically alter this trend, particularly with aggressive marketing campaigns underway for the crucial summer movie season, commencing on the first weekend of May.
Over the past weekend, the box office performance saw a significant improvement as it only fell short by 5% compared to the same period last year, which initially had a 13% difference.
