One less formal way of expressing this could be: The Dishonored series by Arkane Studios is often overlooked as one of the best game franchises ever produced. Unfortunately, it seems unlikely that a third installment will materialize due to the disappointing sales of the second game. After developing Dishonored, Raphaël Colantonio, co-founder and director at Arkane, went on to create Prey and eventually departed from Arkane to establish WolfEye Studios, where they released Weird West, another game that didn’t get as much attention as it deserved.
On an episode of the Quad Damage podcast, Colantonio expressed that not only did he envision Dishonored 3, but he holds a strong desire to work on this project. Unfortunately, following his departure from Arkane Studios in 2017, it appears that the chance to bring his dream sequel to life may no longer be an option.
Three Dishonored 3 versions have already been planned
On the podcast, Colantonio shared that “working on Dishonored 2 for the next four years wasn’t something I was keen on following the release of the first game in 2012.” Instead, while the main Arkane team focused on the sequel and Death of the Outsider, the series creator dedicated himself to the fantastic reimagining of Prey.
When inquired about potentially returning to the series, the creator expressed enthusiasm and stated: “I’d be delighted to. To clarify, at this moment we’re merely discussing possibilities. However, considering the passage of time, Dishonored 3 seems appealing right now, as it might be an opportunity that shouldn’t be missed?
Indeed, Colantonio and his team at Arkane Studios had already been brainstorming ideas for a potential third installment in the series, as had Deathloop’s director Dinga Bakaba and creative director Harvey Smith. This suggests that if Microsoft, their new studio owners, grant permission, there could very well be another game in the works. Additionally, not one but three unique concepts have been proposed for this hypothetical third game.
I’ve got a write-up on Dishonored 3, and so does Harvey Smith. I believe Dinga Bakaba might have one as well. At this point, discussing which of these three potential versions could become reality is more like speculating about science fiction,” Colantonio stated.
Colantonio’s projects at Arkane Studios, including Dishonored and Prey, have produced exceptional games, yet his ventures beyond the studio are equally impressive. The game Weird West is an extraordinary find – one that more gamers should experience – and it’s always exciting to see such a creator contributing anywhere in the industry.
