Melissa stabs Van to death in Yellowjackets.

In Season 2, it’s uncovered that Van is fighting a terminal form of cancer. To prolong her life, she appeases an enigmatic entity known as the Wilderness. However, a grim twist unfolds in the most recent episode when she seems to experience a hallucination of her younger self. This apparition offers guidance and urges Van to stand firm against death. The younger self hints at impending doom and advises Van to live out the remainder of her days courageously. Following this encounter, Van exits the hospital accompanied by Misty and Taissa. En route, they run into Melissa, who seems to have crossed paths with Shauna. The group remains vigilant, searching for the individual accountable for Lottie’s passing. Yet, the accusations between Shauna and Melissa persist.

As Misty goes to confer with Walter about a solution, the group determines their next steps. During their conversation, Melissa shuts the chimney, causing carbon monoxide to build up, poisoning the room. Upon her return, Shauna and Taissa are found unconscious on the floor by Van. She tries to save them and later confronts Melissa, considering that killing her could boost her survival chances and please the enigmatic Wilderness. Yet, her compassion prevents her from taking Melissa’s life. Unfortunately, this gives Melissa the opportunity to brutally slay Van instead.

Why did Melissa kill Van in Yellowjackets?

Melissa’s recent harsh behaviors indicate that she’s yet to heal from her troubled past and painful experiences. She thinks that eliminating Van is in line with the Wilderness’s desires, but she knew Van wouldn’t harm her because of her benevolence. Nevertheless, it’s unclear if her aggressive acts are genuinely driven by some supernatural entity or merely a manifestation of her true character.

Previously, Melissa had attempted to persuade Van that the concept of sacrifices and benefits wasn’t genuine. Despite this, Van remained unconvinced, expressing that there was a part of Melissa that was uncertain about it herself. Melissa eventually managed to convince Van that she had undergone a transformation and made her see the goodness within herself. However, Van, who harbored intentions to harm Melissa, found herself restrained by her kindness and felt remorse for not acting on her violent impulses. Instead of consoling Van, as one might expect, Melissa deceives and attempts to comfort her. Eventually, she viciously attacks Van with a knife.
