For two decades, Abraham Lincoln was married to Mary Todd, but could it be possible that the 16th president had a secret romantic life with men? This intriguing question is addressed in the trailer of the LGBTQIA+ film titled “Lavender Men.
Drawing inspiration from Roger Q. Mason’s eponymous stage play, I find myself captivated by “Lavender Men” – a thought-provoking exploration of Abraham Lincoln’s sexuality. As a fan, I’m thrilled to learn that this dynamic duo, Roger and the film’s director, Lovell Holder, collaborated on both the stage play and its cinematic adaptation. Their groundbreaking work first came to life in 2022 at L.A.’s Skylight Theater Company, where it was warmly received by critics.
Lovell Holder shared with THR his recollections of old times with Roger Q. Mason, dating back to their adolescence, and offered warm remarks regarding their latest collaborative endeavor.
Holder remarked, “I wouldn’t have thought back in 2025 that we’d be officially unveiling our movie adaptation. This film was a heartfelt collaboration among friends and associates, made over the course of ten days with enthusiasm and fervor for this narrative being the driving force. I hope this movie inspires, brings joy, and provides direction to the LGBTQIA+ community in the U.S. and beyond at a point when we need tales that validate, empower, and motivate us more than ever.
Previously, discussions about Abraham Lincoln’s sexual orientation have surfaced within the entertainment world. Last autumn’s documentary, “Lover of Men: The Hidden Truth About Abraham Lincoln,” delved into the hypothesis that the U.S. president might have been homosexual. This sparked controversy with Elon Musk and conservative figures expressing their disapproval. Additionally, there’s a humorous play called “Oh Mary!”, where Mary yearns for a life as a cabaret singer, while Lincoln employs his wife to conceal his sexuality.
What happens in the Lavender Men trailer?
In the Lavender Men trailer, we find the solitary stage manager, Taffeta (performed by Roger Q. Mason), growing discontent with their Abraham Lincoln production. To express this internal struggle, they conjure up a fanciful scenario pondering whether Abraham Lincoln had male admirers such as his legal assistant, Elmer Ellsworth. Throughout this mental theatrical performance, Taffeta provides their perspective while assuming various roles, including an army cadet, Mary Todd Lincoln, and even a tree.
The trailer ends with Taffeta stating, “You can become anything, even anyone. I assure you, everything is achievable.” Here’s the link to watch the full trailer:
The movie titled “Lavender Men” is scheduled for a restricted theater premiere on May 2nd in Washington D.C., Los Angeles, and New York.
