Hidetaka Miyazaki shares The Duskbloods worries of some Elden Ring and Dark Souls fans: “I personally am not much of a PvP person, and I wanted to make something that’s satisfying even for players like me”

One of the most stunning revelations from this week’s Nintendo Switch 2 Direct was The Duskbloods, a new game spearheaded by Hidetaka Miyazaki, the mastermind behind Dark Souls and Elden Ring. This upcoming console-exclusive PvPvE game for the Nintendo Switch 2 is slated for release next year, and fans of Miyazaki’s work who were concerned about the emphasis on player versus player (PvP) combat can rest easy – it appears that the director has taken your concerns into account.

In an interview for Nintendo’s latest blog post series, Miyazaki describes The Duskbloods as primarily a multiplayer game, offering both player-versus-player and player-versus-enemy experiences. Players begin by selecting their characters, then engage in competition to claim the title of “First Blood.” Upon completion of a match, they’ll receive a reward that can be utilized to personalize their character even more, creating an ongoing loop of gameplay.

As a fellow enthusiast, it seems like you don’t need to be a legendary PvP player to thrive in this game, according to Miyazaki. He explains that not every victory condition relies on PvP. Instead, some victories revolve around vanquishing boss enemies. Regardless if it’s PvP or PvE, the goal is to give players a playing experience where they can learn and improve their skills. Consequently, we’ve crafted the PvE boss encounters to be challenging yet rewarding when defeated.

Miyazaki later mentions that his aim was to create an experience enjoyable for players who typically avoid PvP. He himself isn’t a big fan of PvP, but he wanted to design something that would still be rewarding for people like him. During a match, the goal is still to get First Blood, but there are additional objectives with separate rewards that should enhance the enjoyment of each encounter.

If multiplayer games from FromSoftware don’t appeal to you, take comfort in the fact that they are also committed to creating single-player games, such as Elden Ring, which adhere to their traditional gameplay style.
