It seems that Mel Gibson may soon be allowed to own guns again. This is reportedly due to the Justice Department restoring gun rights not only to him, but also to nine other individuals. Earlier, federal law had barred individuals with a history of domestic violence from having firearms. The 69-year-old actor lost this privilege after being convicted of a misdemeanor related to domestic violence in 2011.
Mel Gibson’s gun rights will be restored, claims report
More than a decade has passed since Mel Gibson lost the right to own a firearm, but now he is regaining that privilege. Earlier, the dismissal of Elizabeth G. Oyer from her position as pardon attorney at the Justice Department was connected to issues regarding Gibson’s gun rights.
According to The New York Times, Attorney General Pam Bondi has given approval for Gibson and ten others to legally possess firearms once again. Further details about this decision will be published in The Federal Register at a later time, as reported by sources within the justice department.
Earlier, Oyer expressed reservations about the move to restore gun ownership rights for individuals with a history of domestic violence. In an interview with The New York Times, she stated, “Restoring guns to domestic abusers is a significant issue,” and emphasized that such decisions should not be made lightly. Additionally, she pointed out that there are real, potentially harmful consequences when people with a background in domestic violence possess firearms.
As a supporter, I’m thrilled about the new guidelines from the Justice Department that offer routes for some ex-convicts to reclaim their firearm rights. They’re making it clear they’re dedicated to keeping potentially harmful individuals away from legal guns.
On the other hand, the fresh guidelines recognize the significance of providing a suitable pathway for the reinstatement of rights for eligible individuals. Last month’s provisional rules in the Federal Register detail these new regulations.
In 2011, Gibson was unable to keep his firearm privileges due to a plea bargain for misdemeanor battery against his former girlfriend. This plea deal meant that he served no time in jail. As explained by Gibson’s lawyer Blair Berk, this plea agreement allowed Gibson to avoid admitting guilt, according to the Los Angeles Times.
