Curious about the whereabouts of Vergil in Devil May Cry? Despite being largely absent throughout the series, a crucial disclosure in the last episode offers fresh insight into his fate. A fleeting but significant scene suggests that Vergil might not be as misplaced as Dante previously thought.
Let’s take a look at the latest insights regarding Vergil’s enigmatic reappearance, his role in the current situation, and potential implications for the future.
Does Dante find his brother Vergil in Devil May Cry?
In the last episode of Devil May Cry (2025, Netflix), Dante learns from White Rabbit that his long-lost twin brother Vergil, who was believed deceased since childhood, is actually still alive. White Rabbit cryptically tells Dante, “Your other self is very much living,” before stabbing him to unlock the gates of Hell with a mixture of both their bloods.
In simpler terms, Dante declares, “I must exist for him,” and starts looking for Vergil. But just as he’s about to take action, Lady administers a serum to him, warning, “Given your unique abilities, it’s too risky for you to be out there in the world.” Consequently, DARKCOM freezes Dante in cryostasis, putting his quest on hold.
In the underworld, Vergil is seen in a prison overseen by the Uroboros. He sets free the imprisoned demons, telling them, “Our ruler Mundus has granted you your liberty. Show him your appreciation.” He then transitions into his human form, armed with a katana and sporting his traditional blue coat from the games.
How was Vergil alive in Devil May Cry?
As a gamer, I find it intriguing that the game series doesn’t spell out how Vergil managed to make a comeback, but his reemergence clearly hints at an ancient pact with King Mundus. In the prison, Vergil shares, “Mundus was the one who broke my chains,” which makes me think he was held captive or under control before his release.
In the story, he’s initially portrayed as a potent demon known as “The Knight.” Later, we see him transition into his human form. This evolution and his eventual alliance with Mundus echoes his “Black Knight” saga from the games, where he endures torment and corruption at Mundus’ hands in Devil May Cry 3.
Vergil’s last utterance, “I am the tempest,” underscores his position as a significant adversary allied with Mundus. As the series concludes, it becomes clear that he is readying himself for more battles, hinting at possible future clashes with Dante in potential subsequent seasons.
Devil May Cry is available to stream on Netflix.
